Chapter 1 - The Wrath of Victor Blackwood

The heavy mahogany double doors of the Blackwood mansion slammed open with a sound like thunder, sending a shudder through the grand foyer.

The cold Chicago wind rushed in from the rainy night, carrying with it the terrifying aura of a man whose name made hardened criminals tremble. Victor Blackwood—the ruthless, undisputed head of the syndicate—stood in the doorway. His tailored dark suit was immaculate, his leather gloves still damp from the rain, and his piercing obsidian eyes locked instantly onto the scene unfolding in his grand entrance.

He was three hours early.

Time froze.

The marble foyer, usually silent and pristine, was transformed into a theater of horror. On the floor lay Lily, the twenty-three-year-old nanny, gasping for air as Serena Montigue’s sharp stilettos remained pressed ruthlessly against her ribs. But what caught Victor’s eyes—and shattered the ice in his veins—was his fourteen-month-old son, Ethan.

The boy was lying on the cold stone, his breath coming in shallow, ragged hitches. His left arm hung at a sickening, unnatural angle.

"What is the meaning of this?" Victor’s voice didn't roar. It dropped into a quiet, vibrating register that was infinitely more dangerous than a scream. The temperature in the room seemed to drop below freezing.

Serena’s head snapped toward the door. For a microsecond, panic flickered in her pristine blue eyes, but years of high-society deception kicked in almost instantly. She pulled her foot off Lily’s stomach, her face melting into a look of hysterical grief and terror as she dropped to her knees beside Ethan.

"Victor! Oh God, Victor, thank heaven you’re home!" Serena sobbed, her hands hovering near the child, pretending to cradle him without touching the injury. "It’s the nanny! I came in to check on Ethan and found her dragging him down the stairs! She dropped him, Victor! I tried to pull him away from her, but she attacked me!"

Serena’s performance was flawless. She squeezed out real tears, her delicate shoulders shaking as she clutched her designer handbag to her chest. She was the daughter of Senator Montigue, a woman of pristine lineage and Victor’s fiancée of three months.

Lily choked on her breath, struggling to sit up. Pain flared through her torso, but she ignored it, dragging herself on her hands and knees toward the baby.

"No..." Lily whispered, her voice rasping through a throat filled with blood and dust. "Mr. Blackwood... please... Ethan... his arm..."

"Stay back, you psychotic bitch!" Serena shrieked, cowering toward Victor as if seeking protection. "Victor, get her away from our son! She’s crazy! She’s been acting strange all week!"

Victor didn't say a word. He stepped into the foyer, his heavy leather shoes striking the marble with rhythmic, deliberate clicks. Behind him, his two top enforcers, Marcus and Anton, stepped into the hall, their hands immediately moving under their dark trench coats toward their concealed firearms.

Victor ignored Serena. He ignored the grand spectacle she was making.

He knelt down beside Ethan.

The ruthless mafia boss, who had signed death warrants without blinking, reached out with astonishing gentleness. His massive, gloved hand hovered over his son’s tiny chest. He could feel the rapid, frantic fluttering of Ethan’s heart. The baby opened his swollen, tear-filled eyes, recognizing his father, and let out a tiny, whimpering sound—“Da... da...”

Victor’s jaw clenched so hard the muscles in his face turned to stone. He recognized the dislocation immediately; he had seen enough broken bones in his line of work. But seeing it on his innocent, helpless child ignited a inferno of lethal rage inside him.

"Marcus," Victor commanded, his voice deadly steady. "Get Dr. Evans here. Five minutes. If he isn't here in five minutes, burn his clinic down."

"Yes, Boss," Marcus answered, already whipping out his phone and stepping outside.

Victor gently lifted Ethan into his arms, supporting his broken limb with expert precision, wrapping his warm wool coat around the shivering child. Only then did he stand up and turn his gaze toward the two women on the floor.

Serena rushed to Victor’s side, reaching out to touch his arm. "Victor, darling, let me hold him. We need to lock that girl in the basement until your men handle her. She hurt our baby—"

"Touch me again, Serena," Victor said, his dark eyes fixing on hers with absolute zero warmth, "and I will break your hand where you stand."

Serena froze, her hand hovering in mid-air. Her breath caught in her throat. "V-Victor? You can't possibly believe—"

"Silence," Victor barked.

He turned his gaze to Lily. The young nanny was still on her knees, her pale face bruised, her clothes disheveled, but her tear-filled eyes were fixed entirely on Ethan, filled with raw, unadulterated agonized concern for the child. She wasn't trying to run. She wasn't pleading for her life. She was only looking at the baby.

"Lily," Victor said, his voice cutting through the tension like a straight razor. "Talk. Tell me what happened."

"Victor, why are you listening to a servant?!" Serena shrieked, her voice losing its delicate polish and turning shrill. "I am your fiancée! My father is—"

Anton stepped forward, his massive frame looming over Serena, his hand resting on the hilt of his weapon. "The Boss told you to be quiet, Miss Montigue."

Lily took a painful breath, clutching her ribs. She looked directly into Victor’s terrifying dark eyes, refusing to back down.

"Mr. Blackwood," Lily rasped, every word costing her immense physical effort. "Ethan was crying in his nursery. I went to check on him. Miss Montigue was in the room... she was trying to force him into a stiff jacket for a photo shoot. Ethan refused and cried. She got angry... she grabbed him by his left wrist and yanked him off the crib. I ran to stop her. She dragged him all the way to the top of the stairs, threatening to throw him down if he didn't stop screaming. When I grabbed his other side to save him, she pulled him violently, popping his shoulder... then she kicked me down the last four steps."

"She’s lying! She’s lying!" Serena screamed, her face contorting into a mask of pure fury. "She’s trying to cover her own incompetence! Look at her—she’s just a poor nobody trying to frame me because she wants your money!"

Victor listened, his face completely unreadable.

At that moment, the front doors burst open again, and Dr. Evans, the syndicate’s private physician, rushed in carrying a heavy medical bag, looking pale and out of breath.

"Mr. Blackwood!" Dr. Evans gasped.

"In the drawing room. Now," Victor ordered, carrying Ethan past the crying Serena without giving her a second glance. "Anton, secure the doors. Nobody leaves this estate. Not even my fiancée."
