Chapter 3 - The Price of Treason

Victor looked down at Serena with cold indifference.
"Kill you?" Victor murmured softly. "Death is too merciful for someone who tortures a child, Serena. Death grants peace. You do not deserve peace."
He turned to Anton. "Take her to the dark house in the docks. Strip her of her jewelry, her phone, her designer clothes. Give her the rags of a prisoner. She will remain there until her father transfers every single one of his shipping port permits to my company."
"No! No! You can't do this!" Serena shrieked as Anton’s massive hands clamped onto her arms, lifting her off the floor effortlessly. "My father is a Senator! He will send the FBI! He will tear your syndicate apart!"
"Your father is a coward who owes twenty million dollars to my underground casinos," Victor replied smoothly, taking a sip of his whiskey. "When he sees the security footage of what you did to my son, he will hand over those port permits on his knees just to keep me from sending the video to the press and ruining his political career."
"Victor! Victor, please!" Serena’s screams echoed down the long marble corridor as Anton dragged her kicking and screaming out of the mansion, her manicured nails scraping uselessly against the mahogany doors until the sound faded into the night.
The drawing room became quiet again.
Victor stood by his desk for a long moment, watching the amber liquid swirl in his glass. The fury in his blood was still simmering, but the immediate threat had been neutralized.
He turned his head toward the armchair.
Lily was still sitting there, trembling slightly, her face pale, holding the melting ice pack against her ribs. She looked small, fragile, and utterly exhausted. Yet, despite her pain, her eyes kept drifting back to the sofa, checking on sleeping little Ethan.
Victor walked over to her. The intimidating mafia boss lowered himself, dropping to one knee in front of her chair—a posture no man in Chicago had ever seen Victor Blackwood assume.
Lily gasped slightly, trying to shrink back into the cushions. "M-Mr. Blackwood..."
"Hold still," Victor commanded gently.
Before she could protest, Victor reached out, taking the melting ice pack from her hands. He replaced it with a fresh, dry towel, his large, warm hands brushing against her icy skin. His touch was surprisingly soft, completely devoid of the violence he had displayed moments ago.
"You fought for my son," Victor said, his dark eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made her heart skip a beat. "She kicked you. She threatened your life. Why didn't you run?"
Lily swallowed hard, looking into his eyes. "He’s just a baby, Mr. Blackwood. He doesn't have a voice. He couldn't defend himself. I... I couldn't live with myself if I walked away and let her hurt him. I love Ethan. I would give my life for him."
Victor stared at her. For six months, he had viewed Lily as merely an employee—a quiet, background figure who kept his son clean and fed. He had paid her a generous salary, assuming that was the extent of their transaction. He had never truly seen her.
He saw her now.
He saw the fierce, unyielding motherly devotion burning behind her soft hazel eyes. He saw the bravery of a young woman who had stood up to a monster despite having no power, no money, and no weapons.
"You saved his life tonight, Lily," Victor whispered, his voice deep and sincere. "And a Blackwood always pays his debts."
"I don't need payment, sir," Lily murmured softly, shaking her head. "Just... please let me stay until he gets better. Please don't fire me."
A small, genuine smile touched the corner of Victor’s lips—a rare, mesmerizing sight that completely transformed his harsh features.
"Fire you?" Victor asked softly. "Lily, you are the only person in this city I trust with my son’s life. You aren't going anywhere."
At that moment, Dr. Evans stepped back into the room holding a small medical kit. "Mr. Blackwood, I’ve examined the nanny. She has two cracked ribs and severe bruising on her abdomen. She needs rest and proper medication immediately."
Victor’s smile vanished, replaced instantly by protective sternness. He stood up and, without warning, scooped Lily up into his arms, lifting her off the armchair as if she weighed nothing at all.
"W-What are you doing?!" Lily gasped, instinctively wrapping her arms around his neck, her face flushing bright red as her chest pressed against his broad, solid torso.
"You are injured," Victor said firmly, carrying her toward the door. "And as long as you are under my roof, you will be cared for."
"But Ethan—"
May you like
"Ethan is sleeping, and Marcus is standing guard right beside him," Victor cut her off, his powerful stride carrying her out of the room and up the grand staircase. "Tonight, you rest."
As he carried her up to the master wing—to a guest suite usually reserved for royalty—Lily rested her head against his shoulder. For the first time in her life, surrounded by the terrifying power of Victor Blackwood, she felt completely, undeniably safe.
