Chapter 5 - The Fall of Evelyn Vance

The heavy iron doors of the Vance family mausoleum creaked open, echoing eerily in the marble chamber.
Evelyn walked inside, her footsteps clicking heavily against the stone floor. She walked past the marble tombs of her late husband and ancestors, stopping in front of a massive bronze statue at the back of the crypt.
She reached behind the base of the statue, pressing a hidden scanner. A soft beep sounded, and a section of the stone floor slid open, revealing a lit spiral staircase leading into an underground bunker.
Evelyn descended the stairs, arriving in a sterile, temperature-controlled room filled with server racks glowing with green and blue LED lights. This was her throne room—the vault containing the dark secrets of every powerful figure in the state.
She walked directly to the central terminal, typing in her master passkey and pressing her thumb against the scanner.
WARNING: THERMAL ERASURE PROTOCOL INITIATED. 60 SECONDS UNTIL TOTAL DATA DESTRUCTION.
"Goodbye, secrets," Evelyn whispered to herself with a bitter laugh. "Let's see them build a case without a single scrap of proof."
"It's over, Evelyn."
Evelyn spun around.
Standing at the entrance of the subterranean room were Arthur and Eleanor. Eleanor held the physical bypass drive she had recovered from Evelyn's house weeks ago, while Arthur stood beside her, his arms crossed, showing no fear.
"How did you get in here?!" Evelyn shrieked, backing against the console. "This room is sealed!"
"You forgot that I helped design the structural architecture of this mausoleum ten years ago, Mother," Arthur said softly. "I built an emergency fire override into the system."
Arthur reached into his pocket and pressed a remote detonator button.
Instead of heat spreading through the server racks, a loud CLACK sounded through the ceiling. The thermal sequence aborted, and the main system terminal flashed bright blue:
DATA TRANSFER COMPLETE. ALL DRIVES CLONED AND TRANSMITTED TO FEDERAL CLOUD STORAGE.
Evelyn stared at the screen, her breath hitching in her chest. Her face drained of all color. "No... no, no, NO!" She smashed her hands against the keyboard, but the terminal locked down completely. "My files! My records!"
"Every judge you bribed, every official you blackmailed, every illegal transaction you used to destroy innocent lives—it’s all in the hands of the Department of Justice right now," Eleanor said, stepping forward, her voice calm and absolute. "You lost, Evelyn."
"You ruined everything!" Evelyn screamed, her composure completely shattering into hysterical rage. She rushed toward Eleanor, her fingers bent like talons, ready to tear into her daughter-in-law.
Arthur stepped smoothly in front of his mother, catching her wrists firmly, holding her back without exerting unnecessary violence.
"Don't, Mother," Arthur said, looking at her with a mix of deep sadness and absolute detachment. "It’s over."
The sound of heavy tactical boots echoed down the spiral staircase. Within seconds, a dozen federal agents, led by the Chief Assistant District Attorney, flooded into the server room.
"Evelyn Vance," the District Attorney stated loudly, pulling out a thick arrest warrant. "You are under arrest for federal racketeering, financial fraud, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy to commit murder. Take her into custody."
Two female officers stepped forward, pulling Evelyn’s hands behind her back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists.

For the first time in her life, Evelyn Vance looked small, fragile, and utterly defeated. As she was led up the stairs, she looked back at Arthur one last time, her eyes pleading for mercy.
Arthur simply took Eleanor's hand, turning his back on his mother forever.
