Chapter 4 - The Betrayal

The atmospheric hiss of the rain against the glass roof of the greenhouse was the only sound in the terrifying silence.

Julian stood five paces away, the barrel of his silenced weapon focused steadily on Arthur’s chest.

"Julian," Arthur said, taking a slow, deliberate step forward, shielding Eleanor and Lily completely behind his frame. "You’ve worked for my family since I was a teenager. You know what my mother is. You know she framed me, and you know she just put her hands on a six-year-old child."

Julian’s jaw tightened slightly, but his gun didn't waver. "My loyalty is to Mrs. Vance. She pays for my daughter’s medical care, Mr. Vance. I don't have the luxury of a moral conscience."

"Do you really think she’ll keep paying once this all falls apart?" Eleanor called out from behind Arthur, her voice echoing clearly in the glass room. "Evelyn is being investigated by federal prosecutors right now! The moment she realizes you know too much, she will cut you loose just like she cut Arthur loose!"

Julian sneered. "Mrs. Vance doesn't lose."

"She already lost," Eleanor said, stepping into view, holding up her cell phone. The screen displayed an active, live audio broadcast stream connected directly to the lead federal prosecutor's office. "Every word you’ve said for the last two minutes has been recorded and transmitted live to federal agents. You are standing on private property threatening a federal witness with a firearm, Julian."

Julian’s eyes widened in sudden panic. He glanced down at the phone, then back at Eleanor.

Taking advantage of the split-second distraction, Arthur lunged forward!

Arthur slammed his shoulder into Julian’s torso, driving him backward into a wooden potting table. The gun went off with a quiet thwip, shattered a glass panel above their heads, sending shower of glass rain down upon the room.

The two men crashed to the floor, wrestling violently for control of the weapon. Julian was trained, but Arthur was fueled by pure, unadulterated paternal rage. Arthur grabbed Julian's wrist, slamming it against the concrete floor until the weapon skittered away into the dark greenery.

Arthur delivered a swift punch to Julian's jaw, knocking the enforcer unconscious.

Gasping for air, Arthur stood up, retrieving the fallen weapon and handing it to Eleanor. "Are you two okay?"

"We're fine!" Eleanor said, holding a crying Lily close. "Arthur, we don't have time. Evelyn will notice Julian isn't responding to his radio. She's going to head straight for the cemetery to purge the server room!"

"Let’s go," Arthur said, grabbing his daughter and heading for the rear gates where his trusted friend’s vehicle was parked.

Thirty minutes later, under a torrential downpour, two black SUVs pulled up to the iron gates of the Vance Family Cemetery on the outskirts of the city.

Evelyn Vance stepped out of the lead vehicle, shielded by an umbrella held by one of her loyal guards. Her face was twisted in a mixture of rage and desperation. She pulled out her phone and dialed a private number.

"Is the memory wipe sequence ready?" Evelyn demanded, stepping through the wrought-iron gates toward the grand marble mausoleum.

"Yes, Mrs. Vance," her head IT technician responded over the line. "Once you enter your biometric key at the main vault console inside the crypt, the thermal destruction system will activate, melting every hard drive in forty-five seconds."

"Do it," Evelyn ordered, her eyes gleaming with ruthless coldness. "I built this empire, and I will burn every secret to the ground before I let Eleanor and Arthur take it from me!"
