Chapter 3 - The Secret Vault

Under the cover of the chaotic federal search, Eleanor slipped silently out of the wardrobe, slipping out through the study’s hidden service door while the officers kept Evelyn occupied in the main hallway.
She met Arthur and Lily in the dark greenhouse at the far edge of the estate.
The moment Eleanor stepped into the glass room, Lily broke free and threw her arms around her mother's waist. "Mommy! I didn't tell her! I didn't say anything!"
Eleanor dropped to her knees, burying her face in Lily's small shoulder, weeping tears of pure relief. "I know, baby. I know. You were the braves girl in the world. I’m so sorry you had to go through that."
Arthur stepped forward, wrapping his broad arms around both of them, pulling his wife and daughter close against his chest. For six agonizing months, while framed for financial crimes he didn't commit, he had dreamed of this moment.
"Are you hurt?" Arthur asked softly, wiping a tear from Eleanor's cheek.
"I'm okay," Eleanor whispered, her voice trembling. "Did you get the drive?"
"Yes," Arthur nodded, reaching into his jacket to pull out a small black flash drive. "The financial ledger you retrieved from Evelyn’s safe house was enough to get me emergency bail, but it's not enough to put her away permanently. Her lawyers are already filing motions to declare the evidence inadmissible because it was obtained without a warrant."
Eleanor’s expression turned grim. She knew how dangerous her mother-in-law was. Evelyn Vance had spent thirty years bribing officials, silencing witnesses, and crushing anyone who stood in her way.
"She thinks she’s untouchable because of the vault," Eleanor said quietly.
Arthur frowned. "The vault beneath the old bank building downtown?"
"No," Eleanor shook her head, her eyes flashing with determination. "Not the bank. She built a private, off-grid server room underneath the family mausoleum at the private cemetery. It holds the physical hard drives containing decades of extortion files on judges, politicians, and police chiefs. That is how she controls everyone, Arthur. That’s why no charge ever sticks to her."
Arthur stared at her in shock. "The mausoleum? How did you find out about that?"
"I followed her personal assistant two weeks ago," Eleanor explained quickly. "Evelyn goes there on the first Sunday of every month. The entrance is behind the family crypt. If we can get those physical hard drives to the state prosecutor before her legal team shuts down the investigation tomorrow morning, Evelyn will never set foot outside a prison cell again."
"It's too dangerous, Eleanor," Arthur said, his eyes filled with deep concern. "Evelyn’s private security firm watches that cemetery twenty-four seven. If she realizes what we're going after, she’ll destroy the drives—or worse, she’ll order her men to use lethal force."
"She already tried to destroy our family, Arthur," Eleanor said firmly, grabbing his hand. "She touched our daughter tonight. I am not running anymore. We finish this tonight."
Just then, the quiet of the greenhouse was broken by the sharp crack of a branch breaking outside.
Arthur instantly pushed Eleanor and Lily behind him, reaching for a heavy iron garden tool on the shelf.
From the shadows of the estate gardens, a figure emerged, holding a raised flashlight.

It wasn't a police officer. It was Julian—Evelyn’s chief of security, a cold-eyed man who had worked as Evelyn’s enforcer for over fifteen years.
"Mr. Vance," Julian said, his voice flat and ominous as he leveled a silenced pistol directly at Arthur's chest. "Mrs. Vance senior anticipated you would come here. Hand over the flash drive, or none of you leave this garden alive."
