Chapter 1 - The Breath of Silence

The suffocating darkness inside the antique oak wardrobe smelled faintly of lavender and old wood. Inside, Eleanor held her palms flat against her mouth, her knuckles white, her pulse drumming like a war hammer in her ears.
Through the wooden slats of the closet door, she could see the dimly lit study. And there, standing in the middle of the room under the single yellow bulb, was her six-year-old daughter, Lily.
"Look at me when I am speaking to you, child!"
The voice belonged to Evelyn Vance—Eleanor’s mother-in-law, a woman whose name carried immense weight in high society, but whose heart was made of polished obsidian. Evelyn stepped closer, her expensive diamond ring catching the dim light as she grabbed Lily’s delicate chin, forcing the sobbing child to look up.
"Where did she put the safety deposit key, Lily?" Evelyn’s voice dropped to an icy, sinister whisper. "You know where your mother hid it. If you don't tell me right now, I will make sure you never see your father again. I will send you away to a school so far away you’ll forget what a home feels like."
"I... I don't know, Grandma!" Lily sobbed, tears streaming down her pale cheeks, her tiny body trembling violently. "Mommy didn't give me anything! Please, you're hurting my arm!"
Inside the closet, inches away, Eleanor’s heart tore into pieces. Every maternal instinct screamed at her to throw open the heavy oak doors, to tear Evelyn away from her daughter, to beat the woman with her bare hands. But she couldn't move.
If Eleanor stepped out now, Evelyn’s two hired guards standing outside the study door would instantly overpower her. The ledger—the dark, explosive evidence proving Evelyn Vance had orchestrated the legal frame-up that sent Eleanor’s husband, Arthur, to prison—would be destroyed forever. Eleanor had to protect the ledger, but watching her innocent child suffer was a special kind of hell.
"Don't lie to me!" Evelyn snarled, tightening her grip on Lily's shoulder. "Your mother is a thief! She ruined my son's life, and now she's hiding like a coward!"
Lily's tear-filled eyes flickered toward the oak wardrobe for less than a second.
Eleanor’s breath stopped dead in her throat. No, baby, don't look here... please don't look at me...
Evelyn, hyper-vigilant and sharp as a razor, caught the micro-expression instantly. She slowly let go of Lily's shoulder, her cold gray eyes sweeping across the room until they landed directly on the heavy oak wardrobe sitting in the shadowy corner.
A slow, terrifying smile spread across Evelyn’s face.
"She didn't run far, did she?" Evelyn whispered, stepping slowly toward the wardrobe, her designer heels clicking with brutal rhythm against the hardwood floor.
Click. Click. Click.
Eleanor backed up as far as the small wooden space allowed, her back hitting the rear panel. She slid her hand into her coat pocket, her fingers closing around the cold steel of a heavy brass candlestick she had grabbed earlier. If she was caught, she would fight to the death.
Evelyn reached out her gloved hand, her fingers inching toward the brass handle of the closet door.
"Come out, Eleanor," Evelyn crooned softly. "Let’s end this little game."
Just as Evelyn’s fingers touched the metal handle, a loud, violent commotion shattered the silence from the front hall outside.
BANG!
The study doors burst open. One of Evelyn’s bodyguards tumbled backward across the floor, crashing into a side table.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Evelyn spun around in absolute fury.
May you like
Standing in the doorway, breathless, rain-soaked, and flanked by three federal officers in tactical gear, was Arthur Vance—Eleanor’s husband, who was supposed to be locked away in a high-security facility.
"Get your hands off my daughter, Mother," Arthur said, his voice terrifyingly calm.
