Chapter 2 - The Cracks in the Empire

The tension in the study turned so thick it was impossible to breathe.

Evelyn froze, her hand still hovering inches from the wardrobe where Eleanor was hidden. She stared at her son in absolute disbelief. "Arthur? How... how are you out? You are supposed to be awaiting trial!"

"The judge granted emergency bail twenty minutes ago," Arthur replied, stepping into the room. He didn't look like the broken man Evelyn had tried to turn him into. His eyes were sharp, determined, and blazing with righteous anger. "Because new evidence was submitted to the state prosecutor. Evidence proving that the embezzled funds in my firm weren't moved by me, but routed through your private offshore shell companies."

Evelyn’s face twitched, but she quickly recovered her formidable composure, smoothing down her coat. "Nonsense. You've been manipulated by that scheming wife of yours. She's delusional, Arthur. She’s taken Lily, she’s hiding, and she’s trying to tear this family apart!"

"Mommy isn't a liar!" Lily suddenly cried out, breaking away from Evelyn and running toward Arthur.

Arthur instantly dropped to his knees, catching his daughter in a tight, protective embrace. He kissed the top of her head, checking her wrists for bruises. "I've got you, sweetheart. Daddy’s here. You were so brave."

Inside the wardrobe, Eleanor let out a long, trembling breath, tears pouring quietly down her cheeks. Arthur was free. The legal team had pulled off the miracle in time.

"Officers," Evelyn said coldly, turning to the federal agents standing at the door. "My son is suffering from severe psychological distress. I demand you escort him off my private property immediately."

The lead agent stepped forward, pulling a signed document from his coat. "Mrs. Evelyn Vance, we aren't here for your son. We have a search warrant for this entire property based on sworn testimony and financial records provided by Eleanor Vance."

Evelyn’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. She cast a darting glare back toward the oak wardrobe. She was beginning to realize that the trap hadn't been set for Eleanor—it had been set for her.

"Where is she?" Evelyn demanded, turning back to Arthur. "Where is Eleanor?"

"She’s somewhere safe," Arthur said, standing up while holding Lily firmly in his arms. He looked straight past his mother, making brief eye contact with the narrow slats of the wardrobe. He knew. He had known the moment he walked into the room.

"Search the house!" the lead officer ordered his team. "Check every room, every safe, every office!"

As the officers spread out across the mansion, Evelyn stepped close to Arthur, lowering her voice to a poisonous whisper. "You think a search warrant changes anything, Arthur? I built Vance Enterprises. I control the board, the judges, and the press. By tomorrow morning, Eleanor will be branded an unfit mother and an international fugitive. You will lose everything."

"You lost the moment you put your hands on my daughter tonight, Mother," Arthur replied softly, his voice devoid of any warmth. "Your empire is already dust. You just haven't realized it yet."

While Evelyn was distracted arguing with the federal agents about the search warrant, Arthur subtly stepped toward the side door leading to the terrace, signaling subtly to the closet.

The battle for the Vance family legacy had officially begun, and Evelyn was finally caught in the net she had spent years weaving.
