Chapter 9 - THE VERDICT

The international press conference took place forty-eight hours later at the Palais de Justice in Paris.
With the combined financial ledgers recovered from the Banque de Paris, the physical records from my father's journal, and the backing of Alessandro’s legal team, the truth could no longer be buried. The evidence was absolute, undeniable, and devastating.
I stood at the podium in front of hundreds of journalists from around the globe. I wore a simple, elegant navy blue dress, my father’s signet ring resting proudly on my finger. Beside me stood Alessandro, dressed in a flawless suit, a silent fortress of support.
"Fifteen years ago," I spoke into the cluster of microphones, my voice clear and echoing through the grand hall, "a French diplomat named Étienne Dubois was framed for the theft of eight million dollars in humanitarian aid. Today, I present the original, unredacted banking records proving that the money was stolen by Black Star Holdings—a criminal syndicate operated by Senator Marcus Vance and Madame Geneviève Vance."
I gestured to the massive digital screens behind me, which displayed the signed bills of lading, the wire transfer receipts, and the full list of corrupt officials who had taken bribes to destroy my father's reputation.
"My father died in exile, branded a thief," I continued, tears finally welling in my eyes, but this time they were tears of triumph. "But today, his name is cleared. The truth has finally caught up with the shadows."
The room erupted into a frenzy of questions and flashing cameras. Across the ocean in New York, federal agents were already executing arrest warrants for Senator Vance and his co-conspirators. Camilla Russo’s social media empire had collapsed overnight after her involvement in the cover-up was exposed, leaving her disgraced and facing criminal obstruction charges.
As the press conference concluded, Alessandro escorted me out through a private side exit, away from the roaring crowd.
We walked into the quiet, sunlit gardens behind the Palais de Justice. The air was crisp, and the autumn leaves were falling gently around us.
"You did it, Sophie," Alessandro said softly, stopping beside a marble fountain. "Étienne Dubois is remembered as a hero today."
"We did it," I corrected, looking up at him. "I couldn't have done any of this without you, Alessandro. You risked your empire, your life, and your family's name for a waitress you didn't even know."
Alessandro took a step closer, his dark eyes softening into a warmth I had never seen in him before. He reached out, his thumb gently wiping away a stray tear from my cheek.
"I didn't do it for a waitress, Sophie," he murmured, his voice thick with unspoken emotion. "I did it for the bravest woman I have ever met. From the moment you stood up to Camilla at L’Étoile Noir, I knew my world would never be the same without you."
My heart pounded, no longer out of fear, but out of a deep, overwhelming certainty. "And what happens now? The trial is over. My father's name is clear."
"Now," Alessandro said, his hands coming up to rest gently on my waist, pulling me close against him, "you never have to wear glued shoes or swallow an insult again. Unless, of course... you prefer New York to Paris?"
May you like
I laughed, a bright, pure sound that seemed to chase away fifteen years of darkness. "I think I prefer wherever you are."
Alessandro smiled—a real, genuine smile that lit up his striking face—and leaned down, pressing his lips to mine in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed our future.
