Chapter 2 - SHADOWS OF DUPICITY

"Put the book down, Laurent," Alessandro said, his tone ominously calm. He didn't even raise his voice, yet the maître d' began to shake violently, pressing himself back against the steel desk.

"Alessandro... please," Laurent whimpered, his polished veneer completely gone. "You don't understand. I was forced into this! The French syndicate... they said they would kill my family if I didn't manage the drop point!"

"You used my restaurant, my reputational umbrella, and my logistics network to move untaxed cargo under the guise of diplomatic immunity," Alessandro said, taking a step into the room. "And worse, you framed an innocent diplomat fifteen years ago to cover your paper trail."

I stepped past Alessandro, my eyes locked on the leather journal in Laurent's hands. "My father... Étienne Dubois. He didn't take that eight million dollars, did he?"

Laurent looked up at me, his eyes wide with desperate fear. "Your father was an honorable fool, Sophie! He found out that Black Star Holdings was shipping arms and unregistered diamonds through French diplomatic crates. He tried to blow the whistle. So the syndicate created a shadow account in his name, transferred the missing aid money into it, and made him the fall guy. He fled because if he stayed, they were going to kill you!"

Tears welled in my eyes, but I refused to let them fall. For fifteen years, I had carried the shame of my father's supposed dishonor. I had lived in squalor, worked degrading jobs, and buried my own ambitions because the world labeled my family as thieves. But he had done it to protect me.

"Where are the rest of the original transfer records?" I asked, my voice steadying.

"In... in the safe," Laurent stammered, pointing a shaking finger toward the steel door standing ajar. "The physical bills of lading bearing the real signatures. The ones that prove Étienne Dubois was framed by Black Star..."

Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the top of the cellar stairs, followed by the muffled sound of shouting and gunfire. Gianni immediately shifted his position, covering the doorway with his weapon.

"Marco!" Alessandro called into his shoulder mic. "Status!"

"Boss, we've got company!" Marco's voice came through the comms, distorted by static. "Two SUVs just pulled up outside. Men in tactical gear—they’re forcing their way through the kitchen!"

"Black Star," Alessandro muttered, his jaw tightening. "They knew the moment the livestream went live that their cover was blown. They’re here to sanitize the site."

Alessandro grabbed me by the wrist and pulled me behind him, using his body as a shield. "Gianni, secure the journal. Laurent, get on your knees and don't move."

Before Laurent could comply, the doorway lit up with muzzle flashes. A hail of bullets shattered the wine bottles along the outer wall, showering us with glass and dark red liquid that looked horrifyingly like blood. Gianni returned fire, his shots precise and controlled, driving the attackers back into the outer cellar.

"We can't stay here," Alessandro said in my ear, his breath warm against my cheek despite the freezing cold of the room. "They will flush this place with grenades if they have to. Sophie, is there another exit out of this sub-basement?"

I racked my brain, desperately searching through the memory of the building blueprints Laurent had once made me memorize for fire safety drills. "The old coal chute! It leads up to the alley behind the kitchen!"

"Show me," Alessandro demanded.

He grabbed the leather journal from Laurent’s hands, shoved it into his inner coat pocket, and grabbed my hand. Laurent tried to scramble after us, crying out for mercy, but a burst of automatic fire through the doorway caught the maître d' in the chest. He fell silent instantly.

There was no time to grieve or process the horror. Alessandro pulled me toward a dark arched opening at the far back of the vault. I scrambled through the narrow passageway, the rough brick scraping against my shoulders, with Alessandro right behind me. Behind us, the shouts of armed mercenaries echoed through the subterranean chamber.

We reached the base of a rusted iron ladder leading up to a metal grate. Alessandro shoved open the heavy grate with brute strength, pushing me up first into the cool night air of the alleyway. Rain had begun to fall, washing away the dirt on my face.

Alessandro climbed out beside me, his expensive suit soaked and stained with wine and grease. He grabbed my arm, pulling me toward a black armored sedan parked at the end of the alley.

"Where are we going?" I gasped, breathless and shivering from the rain and the terror.

"Somewhere safe," Alessandro replied, opening the passenger door for me. "You just blew the lid off an international criminal syndicate that operates within my city, Sophie. And until I find out how deep this corruption goes... you belong to me."
