Chapter 5 - THE ESCAPE TO THE SHADOWS

"They’re moving faster than expected," Alessandro said coldly, showing no sign of panic. He shut his laptop and grabbed the leather journal from the desk. "Vance is using his federal authority to silence Sophie before we can release the manifest."

"What do we do?" I asked, my heart pounding against my chest. "If I go into federal custody, I’ll never make it to a courtroom. I'll die of an 'accident' in a holding cell."

"You’re not going to any cell," Alessandro declared. He walked over to a bookshelf lined with antique leather bindings, pulled a bronze statue of Justice, and a section of the wall swung inward, revealing a private elevator. "This leads to a subterranean tunnel that exits two blocks away at a secure garage."

"Boss, the federal agents are at the front door," Gianni warned, pulling out his earpiece. "Marco is holding them off with legal technicalities, but they’ll be inside in three minutes."

Alessandro turned to me, holding out his hand. "Decision time, Sophie. You can surrender to the government and trust a justice system bought by Marcus Vance, or you can step into the dark with me and take down the men who destroyed your life."

I looked at the open hidden elevator, then down at my own trembling hands. For fifteen years, I had been running, hiding, playing the victim of a story written by corrupt men. I was tired of running.

I took Alessandro's hand. His grip was strong, warm, and resolute. "Lead the way."

We stepped into the elevator, Gianni following close behind. The doors slid shut just as the heavy thuds of federal agents breaching the front doors echoed from the grand foyer above.

The elevator descended rapidly into the subterranean bedrock of Manhattan. When the doors opened, we stepped into a brightly lit concrete garage where a matte-black armored SUV was idling, driven by another one of Alessandro’s trusted men.

"Where are we going?" I asked as we got into the back seat, the heavy doors locking with a reassuring mechanical thunk.

"Safehouse in the Hamptons is compromised," Alessandro said, pulling out a burner phone and dialing a number. "We’re going to the docks. We leave for Paris tonight."

"Paris?" I gasped. "Alessandro, I’m a wanted fugitive! I can’t clear customs!"

"You think the Moretti family uses commercial airlines?" Alessandro said with a faint, dangerous smile. "We own three private airstrips and a freight fleet. If we want to dismantle Black Star Holdings, we have to strike at its heart. The original bank ledgers and physical evidence framing your father are stored in a vault beneath the Banque de Paris."

"And how do you plan to break into a secure vault in the center of Paris?"

Alessandro leaned closer, his dark eyes locking onto mine, his breath brushing against my neck. "With you as my partner, Sophie. You know the code, you know the cipher, and you have the Dubois name. Together, we are going to burn Marcus Vance’s empire to the ground."

The SUV sped out of the garage, slipping unnoticed into the heavy morning fog rolling off the Hudson River. As the Manhattan skyline faded into the mist behind us, I realized that my life as a helpless waitress was officially over. I was entering a dangerous world of blood, power, and secrets—and standing beside the most dangerous man in New York, I had never felt more alive.
