Chapter 4 - THE CHESSBOARD

The morning light streamed through the silk drapes of the guest room, but I had not slept a wink. The newspaper headline burned in my mind. The world was once again painting my family as criminals, but this time, I wasn't going to hide under a false name.

I dressed in the clothes that had been left for me—a tailored ivory wool trousers suit that fit as if it had been custom-made. When I walked down to the grand library on the second floor, I found Alessandro sitting at a massive mahogany desk, sipping black coffee, with my father’s leather journal lying open between two glowing computer monitors.

"You look remarkably put together for a fugitive," Alessandro noted, raising his mug in a quiet toast.

"I don't have time to fall apart," I said, taking a seat across from him. "How bad is it?"

"Publicly? Bad. Camilla's livestream went viral. Over two million people have watched you speak French and translate the code. The police want you for questioning regarding Laurent’s death and the shootout." Alessandro leaned back, resting his chin on his steepled fingers. "Privately? It's much worse. Black Star Holdings has issued a subterranean hit contract on you. Twenty million dollars to whoever recovers the journal and eliminates the reader."

"The reader," I repeated, a cold shiver running down my spine. "Meaning me."

"Meaning you," Alessandro agreed. "However, they didn't count on one detail."

"Which is?"

"They operated in my territory without paying respect," Alessandro said, his tone darkening into something icy and ruthless. "The Moretti family controls the docks, the unions, and the private security networks in New York. Black Star used my restaurant as a laundry mat. That is an insult I do not tolerate."

He slid the journal toward me. "Page forty-two. There is an encrypted string of numbers mixed with geographical coordinates. Gianni tried to run it through our standard decryptors, but it’s returning gibberish. Can you read it?"

I leaned over the yellowed pages, running my fingers over my father's neat, slanted cursive. "This isn't standard French diplomatic cipher. This is the code he used when he took me to the Louvre as a child. He called it the Palette Cipher."

"Explain," Alessandro said, leaning forward, genuinely intrigued.

"He used classic paintings to hide numerical keys. Look at the margin—there is a subtle drawing of a sunflower with seven petals. That refers to Van Gogh’s Sunflowers, exhibited in London, but the key index corresponds to the room numbers of the Musée d'Orsay in Paris."

Alessandro looked at me for a long moment, a subtle smile touching the corner of his lips. "You really are brilliant, aren't you?"

"I was a girl who loved her father," I said quietly. "And who spent fifteen years studying his books because they were all I had left of him."

I took a pen and began working through the string of numbers, translating the coordinates into English names and dates. As the text emerged, my breath caught in my throat.

"It’s not just a list of cargo," I whispered. "It’s a master manifest of every political figure who took bribes from Black Star Holdings over the last decade. Senators, European ministers, high-ranking intelligence officials... and..." I stopped, my eyes widening.

"And who, Sophie?" Alessandro asked, standing up and leaning over the desk.

"And Senator Marcus Vance," I said, looking up at him. "The man currently running for Governor of New York. The man who publicly championed the investigation that destroyed my father."

Alessandro’s eyes went dark. "Marcus Vance is a key ally of my family's main rival, the Falcone syndicate. If Vance gets elected, he gives Falcone total control of the Eastern Seaboard shipping lanes."

"Which means my father was framed not just to cover up the theft," I realized, "but to clear the path for Vance's political career."

Before Alessandro could respond, the heavy mahogany doors of the library burst open. Gianni rushed in, his face tense.

"Boss, we have a breach at the outer perimeter," Gianni reported hastily. "It’s not mercenaries this time. It’s the FBI. They have a federal warrant for Sophie Dubois’s arrest, signed directly by Senator Vance’s special prosecutor."
