Chapter 6 - THE RED SIREN

Thirty-six hours later, the private Gulfstream jet touched down on a private runway outside Le Bourget, France. The rainy New York night was replaced by a crisp, overcast Parisian dawn.

During the flight, Alessandro and I had worked tirelessly through my father's journal. The deeper we dug, the clearer the picture became. My father hadn't just discovered the fraud; he had created a dead-man's switch—a secondary encryption that required two keys to unlock the complete digital files stored in the Banque de Paris. One key was the cipher in his journal; the second was a physical signet ring he had passed down to me, which I still wore on a thin silver chain around my neck, hidden beneath my shirt.

"They thought your father was a simple victim," Alessandro said as we sat in the back of a sleek Mercedes limousine driving toward a private estate in the French countryside. "They didn't realize he was playing a three-dimensional game of chess."

"He was protecting me," I said softly, pulling the small silver ring from beneath my blouse. It was a simple band engraved with a tiny fox's eye. "He knew that as long as I held the key, Black Star would eventually come looking for me. He left me a weapon, not a curse."

Alessandro reached out, his long fingers gently picking up the ring while it was still attached to the chain around my neck. His fingers brushed against the skin of my collarbone, sending a sudden, intoxicating shiver through my body.

"He left you the truth, Sophie," Alessandro murmured, his eyes lingering on mine. "And I promise you, by the time we leave Paris, the world will know that truth."

Our destination was a grand château outside Versailles owned by the Moretti family's European branch. But we weren't here to rest. That very evening, Black Star Holdings was hosting an exclusive charity gala at the Grand Palais in Paris—an event organized by none other than Madame Geneviève Vance, the wife of Senator Marcus Vance.

"It's a victory lap," Alessandro explained, showing me the guest list on his tablet. "Vance is using the gala to secure European funding for his gubernatorial campaign. Every major player in Black Star will be in that room."

"And how do we get in?" I asked. "Our faces are on international watchlists."

Alessandro smiled, his eyes glinting with ruthless charm. "We don't go as fugitives, Sophie. We go as royalty. The European elite only see what they expect to see—wealth, power, and arrogance. I have secured invitations under the names of Count and Countess De Luca."

Two hours later, a team of high-end stylists and tailors arrived at the château. By eight o'clock that evening, I barely recognized the girl in the mirror.

I wore a floor-length dress of deep crimson silk, fitted tightly at the waist with an open back that exuded elegance and danger. My dark hair was swept up into an intricate chignon, held in place by diamond pins provided by Alessandro's private vault. Gone was the fraying uniform and the glued shoes; in their place stood a woman who looked capable of commanding empires.

When I stepped down the grand staircase into the foyer, Alessandro was waiting at the bottom, dressed in a sharp, bespoke black tuxedo. He stopped, his gaze sweeping over me with an intensity that made my breath catch in my throat.

"Magnificent," he said, offering his arm. "You look like a queen going to reclaim her throne."

"I feel like a ghost coming to demand justice," I replied, taking his arm.

As our limousine pulled up to the glittering glass arches of the Grand Palais, cameras flashed continuously along the red carpet. Flashbulbs blinded the dark night, and powerful figures from around the world mingled under the soaring iron ceilings.

We stepped out into the light. I held my head high, my hand resting securely on Alessandro’s arm. We were walking straight into the lion's den, surrounded by the very people who had ruined my life.

And as we entered the grand ballroom, I caught sight of Madame Geneviève Vance across the room, wearing a necklace of stolen diamonds, holding a glass of champagne, completely unaware that the daughter of the man she helped destroy had just entered her sanctuary.
