Chapter 5 - The Retribution

BZZZZT!

The high-voltage shock hit Alejandro squarely in the back. He collapsed to the marble floor, his muscles spasming in agony.

"Alejandro!" Elena screamed. The sight of her husband being attacked did something to her. The fog of sedatives and years of fear seemed to burn away in a flash of pure adrenaline.

Marcus stepped over Alejandro, aiming a heavy boot at his ribs. But before he could kick, Elena grabbed the heavy iron bucket the maid had dropped earlier and swung it with all her remaining strength. It struck Marcus squarely in the knee with a sickening crack. He bellowed in pain and collapsed.

Vivian lunged for the laptop on the table, desperate to erase the evidence, but Elena didn't let her. Years of abuse culminated in a surge of righteous fury. Elena tackled Vivian to the ground, pinning her down.

"You will never touch my family again," Elena hissed, her voice strong and clear for the first time in three years.

Dr. Vance drew a small pistol from his coat, aiming it at Elena. "Amateurs. All of you."

BANG!

The glass windows of the foyer shattered, but it wasn't Vance’s gun that fired. The front doors were kicked off their hinges as a tactical police unit swarmed the mansion. Sirens wailed outside, red and blue lights illuminating the storm.

Alejandro, pushing through the pain of the taser, had managed to hit the silent distress beacon on his watch—a security feature connected directly to the federal police department, bypassing the house's compromised security completely.

Vance dropped his weapon and threw his hands up. Vivian began to wail as handcuffs clicked around her wrists. The nightmare was finally over.
