Chapter 2 - The Secret Empire

Alejandro stared at the electronic lock. He turned back to Vivian, whose eyes were wide with sudden panic.
"What is this, Vivian?" Alejandro demanded.
"I... I have no idea. The previous owners must haveâ"
"This house has been in my family for three generations," Alejandro interrupted, his voice dropping to a deadly whisper. "There was never a keypad here."
Elena stepped forward, her voice a raw, unused whisper. "Four... eight... two... nine..."
Alejandro punched in the numbers. With a heavy, mechanical click, a section of the oak paneling slid backward, revealing a narrow, dimly lit staircase leading straight into the mansion's forgotten sub-basement.
Leaving Marcus to guard Vivian, Alejandro grabbed a flashlight and descended, his heart hammering against his ribs. What he found made his blood run cold.
The basement had been converted into a soundproofed living space. There was a cot, a single chair, a desk, and stacks of documents. But it wasn't just a prisonâit was an administrative office. On the desk sat a high-end laptop, still powered on, and a forgery machine used to replicate signatures.

Alejandro opened the laptop. His jaw clenched as he scrolled through the files. Vivian hadn't just hidden Elena; she had been using her. For three years, whenever Alejandroâs companies required a co-owner's signature from Elena to authorize major offshore transfers, Vivian had forced Elena to sign them under threat of starvation or worse.
Vivian had built a shadow empire worth hundreds of millions, all funded by Alejandro's own money, signed away by his captive wife right beneath his feet. Every time Alejandro had returned home from his global searches, crying over his missing wife, Elena had been just thirty feet below him, listening to the muffled sound of his footsteps.
