Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Whitakers

Camille’s eyes darted toward the high windows of the brickyard, her breath coming in short, ragged gasps. The reality of her situation finally crashed down on her—the Moretti family didn't play by the rules of society. They didn't negotiate with people who threatened their inner circle.
"No... no, you're lying!" Camille screamed, her grip on Elena’s hair tightening. "My father controls the ports! He controls the courts!"
"Your father is currently being arrested at his residence by the FBI," Gabriel said, taking a slow, deliberate step forward. "My legal team spent the last three hours handing over twenty years of Whitaker shipping manifests to the federal prosecutors. It turns out your father was smuggling illegal contraband through his northern routes for years, using my security clearance as a shield. He is ruined, Camille. The Whitaker name is dead."
Camille’s hand began to shake violently, the tire iron slipping slightly from Elena’s neck. "Gabriel... please... we were happy once. We were going to be the most powerful couple in New England."
"We were never happy, Camille. You were just an investment that turned out to be toxic," Gabriel said.
In a flash of movement, Elena used the sudden distraction to slam her boots down onto Camille’s foot with all her weight. Camille shrieked, dropping her grip on Elena’s hair as she stumbled backward.
Before Camille could recover, Gabriel closed the distance. He grabbed the tire iron from her hand, throwing it across the room, and pinned Camille’s arms behind her back with a cold, metallic click. He didn't use violence—he used handcuffs he had taken from his own security detail.
The doors burst open again, and Marco rushed in with a dozen men, followed by the flashing blue lights of the Boston Police Department, who had been tipped off by Gabriel’s corporate lawyers regarding the kidnapping.
"Take her away," Gabriel said, pushing Camille toward the police officers.
Camille screamed and cursed, her champagne dress now stained with mud and soot, her perfect hair ruined as she was dragged out into the rain, facing a lifetime of federal charges for kidnapping, conspiracy, and corporate fraud.
Gabriel immediately turned to Elena. He dropped to his knees in front of her chair, his hands moving with an incredible, desperate urgency to untie the ropes around her wrists and remove the gag from her mouth.
The moment she was free, Elena didn't hesitate. She threw her arms around Gabriel’s neck, burying her face into his chest, sobbing violently as the adrenaline finally left her body.
Gabriel held her tightly, his large arms wrapping around her small frame, pulling her so close she could hear the heavy, steady thumping of his heart beneath his shirt. He buried his face in her brown hair, a deep, ragged breath escaping his lungs. For a man who had never feared anything in his life, the past twenty minutes had been the most terrifying moment of his existence. He had realized, with absolute certainty, that he could lose his entire empire, but he could not live in a world where Elena Brooks didn't exist.
"I’ve got you," Gabriel whispered against her ear, his voice rough with emotion. "You're safe, Elena. I’m here. I’m never letting anyone hurt you again."

Elena pulled back slightly, looking into his dark eyes, her hazel gaze filled with a profound, unshielded devotion. "You came for me."
"I will always come for you," Gabriel said softly, his thumb gently wiping a tear from her cheek. "Let's go home."
