Chapter 2 - The Scent of Scalding Silk

The silence that followed Gabriel’s words was thick, suffocating, and absolute.
Camille Whitaker stood entirely frozen, her lips slightly parted, her blue eyes wide with a mixture of shock and sheer, unadulterated disbelief. She looked down at the black titanium ring sitting on the pristine white tablecloth, glinting beneath the glow of the massive crystal chandelier, then back up at Gabriel’s unreadable face.
"Gabriel," she said, her voice dropping its sharp edge, attempting to claw back the soft, melodious tone she usually used to charm him. "What are you doing? This is ridiculous. It’s a maid. She made a mistake, and I corrected her. You’re making a scene over a spilled teapot."
Gabriel didn't answer her. He didn't even look at her. Instead, he turned his head slightly toward the door where his men stood like statues. "Marco."
Marco stepped forward immediately, his heavy boots clicking against the marble floor. "Yes, Boss."
"Take Elena to the private clinic upstairs. Have Dr. Rossi look at her arm immediately. If she needs a specialist, call one. And ensure she is given a private room to rest." Gabriel’s voice was completely flat, devoid of anger, but carrying an icy weight that brook no argument.
"Right away," Marco said. He walked over to the trembling maid, his large, scarred hand gently guiding Elena Brooks away from the sideboard. Elena was sobbing quietly now, her hand still clamped over the blistering burn on her forearm, her eyes fixed on the floor as she was led out of the grand dining room.
Once the heavy oak doors clicked shut behind them, Camille let out a sharp, incredulous laugh. She threw her hands up, the diamonds on her wrist clinking together loudly. "Are you insane, Gabriel? You just humiliated me in front of your security detail! For a servant? Do you have any idea how bad this looks? My mother is planning our wedding in Newport. The invitations have already been sent to half the senate!"
Gabriel finally looked at her. It was a gaze that had made hardened killers confess to things they hadn't even done. It was devoid of warmth, empty of the affection he had tried to cultivate for her over the past year.
"The invitations can be canceled," Gabriel said quietly, adjusting the cuffs of his shirt where the silver links had been removed. "The wedding is off."
Camille took a step backward, her face draining of color, matching the pale champagne silk of her dress. "You can't do this. We have a contract. Your family needs the Whitaker shipping lines to clear the northern ports, and my father needs your security clearance. You can't just throw away a multi-million-dollar alliance because I have a temper!"
"You don't have a temper, Camille," Gabriel said, leaning his hands slightly on the edge of the table, looking down at her like a judge passing sentence. "You have a sickness. I grew up around monsters. I know what they look like. They look like men who kill for money, and they look like women who pour boiling water on defenseless girls because their pride was pricked. I chose to marry a woman I thought was strong enough to stand beside me. I did not choose to bring a sadist into my home."
"Gabriel, please," Camille stammered, panic finally piercing through her aristocratic armor. She reached out to grab his arm, her manicured nails digging into his black suit jacket. "I’m sorry, okay? I was stressed. The merger meetings, the press—I snapped. I’ll apologize to her. I’ll buy her a new uniform. I’ll give her a bonus!"
Gabriel slowly reached down and detached her hand from his arm, his grip firm but bloodless. He dropped her hand as if it were contaminated.
"You will pack your things and leave this estate tonight," he said, turning his back on her. "Marco will arrange a car to take you back to your father’s estate in Boston. By tomorrow morning, my legal team will dissolve the shipping contracts. We will find another way to clear the ports."
"You’re ruining everything!" Camille shrieked, her voice cracking, losing all its polished elegance. "My father will ruin you for this! The Whitaker family doesn't get dumped like trash!"
Gabriel paused at the threshold of the dining room, looking back over his shoulder. The dim light caught the sharp angle of his jaw, making him look like a piece of carved granite.

"Your father exists in the light because I allow him to," Gabriel said softly. "Remind him of that before he tries to threaten a Moretti. Goodbye, Camille."
He walked out, leaving her standing alone in the massive, echoing room, staring at a black titanium ring that had just cost her the kingdom she had spent her entire life trying to conquer.
