Chapter 4 - The Whitaker Retaliation

Three weeks passed, and the city of Boston was buzzing with the fallout of the broken Moretti-Whitaker engagement.

The high-society tabloids were rife with rumors, but the reality inside the corporate boardrooms was far more dangerous. Arthur Whitaker, Camille’s father and a powerful shipping tycoon with deep political connections, was furious. His daughter’s humiliation had traveled through the elite circles like wildfire, and his business interests were suffering because Gabriel had completely severed their maritime logistics contracts.

Inside a dimly lit private lounge downtown, Arthur Whitaker slammed his glass of scotch onto a mahogany table, staring at his daughter. Camille sat opposite him, smoking a cigarette, her face tight with a bitter, vengeful rage.

"He threw you out like a stray dog, Camille!" Arthur roared. "And for what? A common servant girl? The Moretti family thinks they own this state, but they forget that I control the federal regulators. If Gabriel wants a war, I’ll give him one."

"It’s not just that he threw me out, Father," Camille hissed, her eyes narrowing into slits. "He didn't just fire the maid. He promoted her. She’s sitting in his private office every day now. I had my sources check—she’s handling his personal schedules, traveling in his car. He’s parading her around like she’s some kind of prize."

Arthur’s eyes turned cold. "A maid? Gabriel Moretti is softening. He’s letting a girl control his judgment. That makes him vulnerable. Marco and the old-guard captains won't like this. The Moretti family was built on fear, not fairy tales."

"What are we going to do?" Camille asked, her voice dripping with venom. "I want that girl ruined. I want her to look at her arm every day and remember what happens when you cross me."

"We strike at his pocketbook first," Arthur said, a cruel smile stretching across his face. "I’ve already contacted the Director of the Port Authority. We’re launching a full federal investigation into Moretti Import-Export. We’ll freeze his assets, impound his containers, and tie him up in federal court for the next ten years. And while he’s distracted trying to keep his empire from sinking... we’ll take care of the maid."

Meanwhile, at the Moretti corporate headquarters in the financial district, Elena Brooks was adjusting to her new life.

She sat at a sleek glass desk outside Gabriel’s private office, dressed in a professional charcoal skirt suit that Gabriel had personally commissioned for her. The bandage on her arm was smaller now, the skin healing beneath it. She was focused intently on a computer screen, organizing the logistical routes for a new shipment of Italian olive oil and marble.

Gabriel walked out of his office, a stack of folders in his hand. He stopped by her desk, looking down at her with a quiet, appreciative expression. Over the past three weeks, he had found himself spending more time at the office than necessary, just to watch her work. Elena was diligent, quick to learn, and her presence brought a strange, unprecedented peace to his chaotic, violent world.

"How are the northern schedules looking?" Gabriel asked, leaning against the edge of her desk.

Elena looked up, a bright, genuine smile illuminating her face. "They’re clear, Mr. Moretti. I managed to reroute the shipments through the Providence port instead of Boston. It costs about five percent more in fuel, but it completely bypasses the Whitaker shipping yards."

Gabriel’s eyes softened, a rare flash of genuine admiration crossing his features. "Brilliant. You just saved us a major regulatory headache, Elena. I told you that you were smart."

Elena blushed, looking down at her keyboard. "I just wanted to make sure I was useful to you, Gabriel... I mean, Mr. Moretti."

Gabriel reached out, his thumb gently catching her chin, lifting her face so she had to look into his dark eyes. The proximity was electric, the tension between them growing thicker with every passing day.

"When we’re in this office, Elena, you can call me Gabriel," he said softly, his voice sending a shiver of heat down her spine. "You don't need to hide behind titles with me."

Before she could answer, the elevator doors at the end of the hall opened with a sharp chime. Marco stepped out, his face pale, his hand resting tightly on his firearm. He rushed toward Gabriel, ignoring the corporate setting entirely.

"Boss, we have a situation," Marco said urgently. "The feds just raided the Chelsea docks. They have a warrant signed by a federal judge to impound our entire winter inventory. And Arthur Whitaker’s men were spotted crossing the line into our territory in South Boston. They’re moving fast."

Gabriel’s face transformed instantly, the warmth vanishing, replaced by the lethal mask of the Moretti Don. He let go of Elena’s chin, straightening his posture.

"So, the old man wants to play," Gabriel said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, gravelly register. "Marco, call the captains. Tell them to lock down the warehouses. Elena, stay here. Do not leave this building until I come back for you."

"Gabriel, please be careful," Elena said, her voice filled with a sudden, intense fear for his safety—a fear she realized didn't just stem from her job security, but from a deep, blossoming affection for the man himself.

Gabriel looked back at her, his expression hard but his eyes burning with a fierce protectiveness. "Nobody touches what’s mine, Elena. Remember that."
