Chapter 5 - The Trap at the Warehouse

The storm hit Boston by midnight, rain lashing against the corrugated iron roofs of the industrial district.

Gabriel Moretti stood inside his primary logistics warehouse near the Chelsea docks, surrounded by twenty of his heavily armed men. The atmosphere was tense, the air smelling of oil, sea salt, and impending violence. Marco stood beside him, monitoring the police scanners.

"The federal marshals backed off after our legal team filed the injunction," Marco reported, wiping rain from his face. "But Whitaker’s private security detail didn't get the memo. They’ve been cutting through our perimeter fences down by Pier 4. They’re trying to destroy the inventory to invalidate our insurance contracts."

"Arthur Whitaker is getting desperate," Gabriel said, checking the chamber of his black pistol before tucking it into his shoulder holster. "He knows that if he doesn't break us tonight, his shipping lines go bankrupt by next month. We end this here."

Suddenly, Gabriel’s personal phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out, expecting a call from his corporate lawyers. Instead, an unknown number flashed on the screen. He answered it, a cold premonition tightening in his gut.

"Moretti," he barked.

"Gabriel. Such a shame you’re not at your office right now," a sharp, high-pitched voice purred through the speaker.

Camille.

Gabriel’s grip on the phone tightened until the plastic creaked. "Camille. If you’ve touched a single hair on Elena’s head, I will personally ensure your family name is wiped from the history of this city."

Camille laughed, a hysterical, manic sound that echoed through the rain. "Oh, the little maid? She’s so fragile, Gabriel. She really shouldn't stay late at the corporate headquarters. It’s so easy for someone to bypass the basement security when they have the old codes. We’re at the abandoned brickyard on 5th Street. You have twenty minutes to get here alone. If I see a single one of your security cars, I’ll see how much more hot tea her skin can take."

The line went dead.

Gabriel’s eyes turned entirely black with fury. He turned to Marco, his voice vibrating with a terrifying, quiet rage. "She took Elena."

Marco’s face dropped. "What? How? The building was locked down!"

"Camille still had the executive security overrides from when we were engaged," Gabriel said, his stride already moving toward his black SUV. "She took her to the old brickyard on 5th. Marco, take the men and flank the building from the rear. I’m going in through the front. If anyone tries to stop me, kill them."

"Boss, it’s a trap," Marco argued, running after him. "Arthur Whitaker wants you isolated! You can't go in alone!"

"I am the trap, Marco," Gabriel said, slamming the car door shut and roaring the engine to life.

At the abandoned brickyard, the interior was dark, damp, and freezing cold. Elena Brooks was tied securely to a rusted iron chair in the center of the room, a thick piece of cloth gagging her mouth. Her hazel eyes were wide with terror as she stared at Camille, who was pacing back and forth in front of her, holding a heavy iron tire iron in her hand.

Two large, thuggish men dressed in Whitaker security uniforms stood near the shadows, their rifles trained on the entrance.

"Look at you," Camille mocked, stopping in front of Elena, using the tip of the tire iron to lift Elena’s chin roughly. "A pathetic little nobody. You thought you could take my place? You thought a man like Gabriel Moretti could actually love a girl who scrubs floors? You were just an excuse for him to humiliate me."

Elena shook her head, tears streaming down her cheeks, muffled whimpers coming through the gag. Her arm was throbbing beneath her sleeve, the stress making her healing burn feel like it was on fire all over again.

"Don't worry," Camille smiled cruelly. "Gabriel is coming. He thinks he’s a god in this city, but my father has a sniper waiting on the roof across the street. The moment his car pulls up, the Moretti empire collapses. And you get to watch."

Suddenly, the heavy iron doors of the brickyard didn't just open—they were blown off their hinges with a deafening explosion.

The two guards yelled, raising their weapons, but before they could fire, two precise shots rang out from the darkness. Both men dropped to the concrete floor instantly, their weapons clattering away.

Gabriel Moretti stepped through the smoke, his black coat billowing around him like the wings of an avenging angel, a smoking gun held firmly in his steady hand.

Camille shrieked, backing away, grabbing Elena by her hair and pulling her head back, pressing the sharp edge of the tire iron against Elena’s throat. "Stay back, Gabriel! Stay back or I’ll break her neck! My father has a sniper outside! You’re dead anyway!"

May you like

Gabriel stopped ten feet away, his gun pointed directly at Camille’s forehead. His face was completely devoid of human emotion. He looked like death itself.

"Your father’s sniper was neutralized by Marco five minutes ago, Camille," Gabriel said, his voice dangerously smooth. "You are completely alone."
