Chapter 6 - A New Dawn

Three months later.
The morning air smelled of cinnamon, fresh butter, and a deep, profound peace that no longer had to be monitored or purchased with fear.
The new Rosewood Bakery didn't sit on a quiet, lonely corner in a dangerous American city. Instead, it sat beautifully in the heart of a private, sun-drenched coastal town in southern Italy, where the bright sun shone down on the sapphire waters of the Mediterranean. The entire cobblestone block was owned by the Moretti family, guarded discreetly by men who looked like relaxed tourists but carried automatic weapons beneath their linen shirts.
Elena stood behind the polished wooden counter of her own bakery, laughing warmly as she handed a fresh chocolate croissant to a local customer.
The brass bell above the door jingled cheerfully.
Noah ran inside the shop, wearing a small backpack shaped like a green triceratops. "Mama! Look what Daddy bought me at the market!"
Behind him walked Victor. He wore a casual white linen button-down shirt, the top buttons open to reveal the faint, rugged scar on his shoulder. He looked years younger. The severe, harsh lines on his face had completely softened over the last twelve weeks of recovery and retirement. He had officially handed the daily operations of the New York syndicate over to Marco, choosing to rule the family legacy from afar, in total peace, as a father first.
Victor walked up to the counter, wrapping his powerful arms around Elena's waist from behind, burying his face in her vanilla-scented hair. "He convinced me to buy him another dinosaur toy, El. I am a completely weak man in his hands."
"You're a giant softie," Elena teased, turning around in his embrace to loop her hands securely around his neck.
"Only for you two," Victor murmured, his storm-gray eyes shining with an emotion so fierce and loving it made her breath hitch. He leaned down, kissing her deeply, openly, without a single care for the world outside.
Noah giggled loudly, covering his eyes with his tiny hands. "Eww, gross! Stop kissing!"
Victor laughed, breaking the kiss to easily scoop Noah up onto his broad, uninjured shoulder. "Alright, little man. Time to help Mama close up the shop. We have a family dinner on the beach to get to."
As Elena flipped the sign on the glass door from Open to Closed, she looked at her husband and her son laughing together in the golden afternoon light. The emergency backpack in the closet was gone. The fake IDs were burned to ash. The hidden cash was a distant, forgotten memory.

She had spent six years running from the darkness, only to find that the greatest light of her life was the man who would burn the entire world down just to keep them safe and warm.
They were finally, truly home.
