Chapter 3 - The Traitor Within

The revelation shattered the remaining peace in the room.
Elena gripped the edge of the mahogany desk, her face draining of all color. "They knew. How did they know where we were? I changed my name four times. I paid everything in cash. I never used a credit card or a cell phone registered to my name!"
Victor’s hands clenched into fists so tight his knuckle joints popped. "Because someone inside my own organization leaked it. Someone found out I was running a private, highly classified search algorithm for a specific set of aliases, figured out you had a child, and sold the data to the highest bidder."
"Who?" Elena demanded, her voice shaking with terror. "Who would want to kill a five-year-old boy?!"
"The Rossi family," Victor spat the name out like venom. "Old Don Rossi is dying. His psychotic son, Valentin, wants to take over the city. He knows he can’t beat me in an open turf war. But if he kills my legacy... he breaks me before the war even begins."
Victor turned to Marco, his voice cold enough to freeze water. "Bring in everyone who had access to the tracking databases over the last forty-eight hours. Lock down the entire estate. No one goes out. No one comes in. If a single unauthorized phone signal leaves this property, I will execute the guards myself."
For the next two days, the estate felt like a pressure cooker. Elena tried to keep Noah distracted, playing with him in the playroom, but the heavy, suffocating silence of the house was terrifying.
On the third night, a sudden, absolute blackout plunged the entire estate into pitch darkness.
The emergency sirens didn't wail. The backup generators didn't kick in. The lines had been cut cleanly from the inside.
Elena’s maternal instincts screamed. She immediately grabbed Noah from his bed, covering his mouth gently with her hand. "Shh, baby. Don't make a sound. It's a game, okay? Extreme hide and seek."
Footsteps echoed down the hallway—heavy, hurried, and unfamiliar. They weren't Victor’s measured, calm strides.
The brass doorknob to Noah's room began to turn slowly. Elena backed into the deep walk-in closet, pulling a heavy trench coat over herself and Noah. She held a sharp pair of metal scissors she had taken from the playroom, her knuckles white.
The door clicked open. A harsh flashlight beam sliced through the darkness of the bedroom.
"Where is the brat?" a gravelly voice whispered into a walkie-talkie. "The woman isn't in the bed either."

"Find them and end it quickly," a voice crackled back in response. "The Don is trapped in the basement levels fighting our men. We don't have much time before his reinforcements arrive."
Elena held her breath, tears of absolute terror streaming down her face as Noah trembled violently against her chest. The flashlight beam moved closer and closer to the closet door.
