Chapter 5 - The Price of Blood

The battle for the Moretti estate was brutal, short, and absolute. Through the black-and-white night-vision monitors, Elena watched with her heart in her throat as Victor and his loyal inner circle ambushed the Rossi strike team. Victor moved like a force of nature, taking down targets with terrifying, lethal precision.
But then, the main courtyard monitor flickered. Valentin Rossi himself had arrived in an armored vehicle, holding a heavy military detonator. He had wired the main structural pillars of the mansion with C4 explosives.
Silvio stood right beside him, looking like a vulture waiting for a carcass.
Victor stepped out into the open courtyard completely alone, his guns lowered to his sides. He was intentionally baiting them away from the underground vault.
Elena couldn't hear the dialogue through the silent feed, but she could read Victor's defiant posture. He was negotiating for time, drawing their attention. Suddenly, Silvio drew a concealed pistol and aimed it directly at Victor's chest.
Bang.
Even through the soundproof bunker, Elena felt the vibration of the gunshot. Victor staggered backward, a dark stain blossoming violently on his shoulder.
"No!" Elena screamed at the monitor, slamming her hands against the glass screen.
Noah began to cry loudly, sensing his mother's agonizing despair. "Mama, is Daddy going to be okay?"
Daddy. The word pierced through Elena's soul. In that moment of absolute, paralyzing terror, she realized the truth. She didn't want a life without Victor. She didn't want to run anymore. She loved him. She had always loved him, hidden behind her fear.
On the screen, Valentin laughed hysterically, raising the detonator to blow the entire mansion to pieces.
But Victor simply smiled. It was a bloody, terrifying smirk.

From the shadows behind Valentin, Marco appeared like a ghost. A single, clean sniper shot dropped Valentin Rossi to the stone floor. The detonator fell harmlessly into the fresh snow. Silvio tried to run, but Victor, despite his bleeding shoulder and thigh, lunged forward with terrifying speed. He didn't use a gun. He ended the traitorous uncle with his bare hands, securing the absolute safety of his family once and for all.
Victor collapsed to his knees, his eyes looking directly into the security camera lens, knowing Elena was watching from below. Then, his eyes rolled back, and he fell unconscious into the snow.
