Chapter 4 - The Unbreakable Vow

The closet door was ripped open with brutal force.
Elena screamed, lunging forward blindly with the scissors, but a heavy, gloved hand clamped around her wrist, disarming her instantly and pinning her against the wall.
"Elena, it's me! It's me!"
It was Victor.
In the dim moonlight filtering through the window, she saw he was covered in soot and dark blood, his gray eyes blazing with a feral, protective madness. Behind him in the bedroom, two enemy gunmen lay motionless on the floor.
"They're inside the house," Elena sobbed, completely collapsing against his chest as the adrenaline faded. "Victor, they found us."
"Not for long," Victor growled. He picked Noah up with his left arm, anchoring the boy against his side, and grabbed Elena’s hand tightly with his right. He led them down a hidden service staircase behind the wall paneling, completely bypassing the main halls where heavy gunfire was echoing.
He threw open a reinforced door to an underground bunker beneath the garage—a high-tech, steel-lined vault with its own oxygen filtration system and monitors displaying the entire estate.
He pushed Elena and Noah inside.
"Stay here. The door is biometric. Only my handprint or yours can open it from the inside now," Victor said, his breath ragged, a dark stain spreading across his own left thigh.
"Victor, wait!" Elena cried, grabbing his blood-stained shirt. "Don't leave. Stay here with us. We can wait them out in safety."
Victor looked at her, his expression a mix of profound sorrow and absolute, unwavering devotion. "I can't do that, El. The man who betrayed us is out there right now. It was Uncle Silvio. The man who raised me after my own father died. He sold Noah's location to Valentin Rossi because he thought a child made me soft. He thought a family made the Moretti dynasty weak."
Elena gasped. Silvio had been like a father to Victor during their marriage.
"If I don't end this tonight, they will never stop hunting my son," Victor whispered. He leaned down, pressing a fervent, desperate kiss to Elena’s lips—a kiss that tasted of salt, iron, and six years of starved longing.

He turned to Noah, gently patting the boy's head. "Look after your mom, soldier. I’ll be right back."
The heavy steel vault door slammed shut, locking with a definitive, mechanical thud. On the security monitors, Elena watched as Victor drew two massive firearms, his face hardening into the visage of the Grim Reaper himself, as he walked back up into the darkness of the mansion to slaughter the men who had dared to threaten his family.
