Chapter 2 - Ghosts of the Past

The morning sun rose over the estate, but the tension inside the walls only thickened. Elena hadn't slept a wink. She sat in a plush armchair by Noah’s bedside, watching his chest rise and fall, her mind racing with escape plans that she knew were completely impossible.
A soft, respectful knock sounded at the door. Marco, Victor’s loyal underboss and longtime friend, stood there holding a silver tray filled with breakfast. "The Don thought the little guy might be hungry when he wakes up, ma'am," Marco said quietly.
Elena looked at the tray. Fluffy blueberry pancakes, fresh fruit, and a glass of warm milk. "Thank you, Marco." She paused, her voice dropping. "Who attacked us yesterday? Truly."
Marco’s face went grim, the lines around his eyes tightening. "We’re investigating, ma'am. But the Don is handling it. You’re entirely safe here. The perimeter is locked down by fifty men."
When Noah opened his eyes a few minutes later, he didn't cry. He looked around the magnificent room, his eyes widening at the dinosaur toys. "Mama? Are we in a castle?"
"A safe place, baby," Elena smiled through her exhaustion, kissing his forehead.
The door opened, and Victor walked in. He had changed into a fresh black shirt, the sleeves rolled up to reveal the heavy tattoos of the Moretti syndicate covering his forearms. He carried a small, beautifully wrapped wooden box.
Noah shrank back slightly, clutching Elena’s sweater. Victor noticed, and a fleeting flicker of deep pain crossed his severe features. He immediately dropped to one knee a few feet from the bed, lowering his height to look less intimidating.
"Morning, Noah," Victor said, his voice dropping an octave, losing all its harshness. "I brought you something. I heard from a very reliable source that you like dinosaurs."
Noah looked at the box, then at Elena. She swallowed the bitter lump in her throat and gave a small nod. Noah slid off the bed and cautiously approached Victor. He opened the box to find a rare, fossilized T-Rex tooth on a thick silver chain.
"Whoa," Noah breathed, his identical gray eyes shining. "Is it real?"
"Real as they come," Victor smiled, a genuine, rare expression that completely transformed his rugged face. "Just like you."
Noah looked up at Victor’s face, studying him with an eerie, quiet intelligence. "You have my eyes. Mama has brown eyes. But yours are like mine."
Victor’s breath hitched in his throat. He looked up at Elena, a silent, agonizing plea in his eyes. Tell him.
Before Elena could speak, a sharp knock interrupted them. Marco stepped in, his face completely pale. "Boss. We got the security footage from the street camera across from the bakery. You need to see this right now."
Victor stood up instantly, the warmth vanishing from his eyes as the cold mask slid back into place. He looked at Elena. "Stay here with him."
But Elena was already on her feet, her protective instincts flaring. "No. If this involves my son, I am watching it too."
In the high-tech security study, Marco played the footage. A gray sedan had pulled up across the street. Two men got out. But it wasn't a random ambush on Victor. The camera captured one of the gunmen holding a physical photograph up to his face, looking directly toward the bakery window, and pointing directly at Elena and Noah before they even pulled their weapons.
