Chapter 7 - Betrayal in the Shadows

The following night, a heavy fog rolled over the New York harbor. Evelyn and Marcus stood on the observation deck of the Sterling Port Terminal, watching the massive container ship, The Sovereign, slowly navigate the narrow channel. This ship carried the high-value cargo that would cement Sterling Global's dominance over the Vance empire.

"Everything looks perfectly on schedule," Marcus said, checking his watch. "Once this cargo is cleared, the board transition will be finalized, and Julian will be completely broke."

Evelyn felt a strange sense of unease. The docks were unusually quiet. The security team she had hired seemed stretched thin. Suddenly, the lights across the entire terminal flickered and went pitch black. The loud hum of the backup generators failed to kick in.

"What's happening?" Evelyn asked, her hand instinctively reaching for her phone.

Before Marcus could answer, a loud explosion rocked the lower level of the pier. Flames erupted into the foggy night air, illuminating the shadows of masked men rushing onto the docks.

"It's an ambush!" Marcus yelled, grabbing Evelyn’s arm. "We need to get to the security bunker!"

As they ran down the metal stairwell, they were intercepted by Victor Drago and his crew. Out of the darkness stepped Julian Vance, holding a crowbar, his eyes wild with manic desperation.

"Did you really think it would be that easy, Evelyn?" Julian laughed frantically, the firelight reflecting in his crazed eyes. "You took my company. You took my family name. Now, I'm taking everything you have left."

Marcus stepped between Julian and Evelyn. "Julian, stop this! You're going to prison for life if you do this!"

Julian didn't hesitate. He swung the crowbar, striking Marcus across the shoulder and sending him crashing to the ground. Evelyn gasped, backing away as Julian advanced on her, his face twisted in pure hatred.
