Chapter 3 - Secrets of the Sterling Estate

The battle lines were drawn, but the conflict was far more complicated than a failed marriage. To understand Evelyn's fierce protection of Leo, one had to understand the boy's true lineage. Leo was not the product of a casual mistake, as Julian had claimed. He was the son of Liam Sterling, Evelyn’s late older brother who had tragically passed away in a mysterious helicopter crash five years prior. Leo was adopted by Evelyn to protect his identity from corporate rivals who wanted to eliminate the true heir to the Sterling fortune.

Evelyn returned to her family estate that evening to find Leo playing quietly in the garden, supervised by his nanny. The boy looked up, a small smile returning to his face when he saw Evelyn approaching. She knelt down, hugging him tightly.

"Does it still hurt, sweetie?" she whispered, gently touching his cheek.

"Only a little bit, Mommy," Leo said, his voice small. "Why does that man hate me so much? I only wanted to give you the flowers I picked."

Evelyn felt a painful tightening in her chest. "He doesn't hate you because of anything you did, Leo. He hates you because he is small, and you are going to grow up to be someone very big and very important. Don't ever let anyone make you feel like you don't belong."

Leaving Leo in the garden, Evelyn walked into the grand library where her father, Richard Sterling, sat by the fireplace. Richard was frail, fighting a terminal illness, but his mind remained sharp as a razor.

"Julian’s father called me three times today begging for a truce," Richard said, his voice weak but stern. "He offered to transfer ten percent of their commercial real estate portfolio directly to Leo’s name if we drop the assault charges."

"No truces," Evelyn said firmly. "Julian needs to face criminal charges for what he did to Leo. If we accept a payout, the media will paint us as opportunists who weaponized a family dispute for financial gain."

Richard nodded in agreement. "You're right, my clever girl. But be careful. Marcus Vance is helping you now, but remember he is still a Vance. In the game of thrones, blood usually calls to blood."

Evelyn looked out the window into the gathering darkness. She trusted Marcus for now, but she knew that in the high-stakes world of New York high society, alliances were as fragile as glass.
