Chapter 6 - Dawn in the DeLuca Estate

Six months later, the DeLuca estate was filled with light.
The trial had been short. The evidence was insurmountable. Preston Whitcomb would never see the sun outside of a cage again.
Enzo walked into the sunroom. Harper was sitting by the window, a book in her lap. She wasn't the girl he had married—the trembling, broken thing in the wedding dress. She was strong. She walked with her head high.
The scars were still there, of course. But they didn't define her. They were simply history.
Enzo sat beside her, taking her hand. "The paperwork is done. The estate is officially ours. We can go anywhere, Harper. Anywhere in the world."
Harper closed her book and smiled. It was a genuine, warm smile—the kind he had never thought he’d see on her face.
"I don't want to go anywhere," she said. "I like it here. It’s the first place I’ve ever been where I didn't have to be afraid."
Enzo leaned over and kissed her, a tender, slow promise of a life that was finally theirs to choose. The revenge was finished. The war was over.
There was only the future.
And for the first time in his life, Enzo DeLuca realized that the greatest prize he had ever won wasn't the destruction of his enemy. It was the survival of the woman who had dared to heal the monster.
"I love you," Enzo whispered, the words simple and true.
"I know," Harper replied, resting her head on his shoulder. "And I think, for the first time… I love you, too."

Outside, the Chicago winter was melting, the ice giving way to the first tentative buds of spring. The long, dark night was over.
The scars remained, a testament to the past, but the woman who bore them was finally, irrevocably free. And they were going to spend the rest of their lives making sure she stayed that way.
