Chapter 1 - The Architecture of Pain

Enzo DeLuca stood motionless. The silence in the room was not empty; it was heavy with the weight of a thousand secrets. He looked at the floor—at the scattered, ruined pearls of the wedding dress—and then back at Harper.

She was still on her knees, trembling. Every muscle in her frame was coiled in anticipation of a strike that wasn't coming. The sight of the scars on her back—jagged, silvery, and deep—made Enzo’s blood turn to ice. This wasn't the work of an accident. This was systematic. It was intentional.

"Harper," Enzo said, his voice dropping to a low, rough rasp.

She squeezed her eyes shut, a tear carving a track through her foundation. "I'm sorry. I know I ruined the dress. I know it was expensive. I’ll… I’ll do whatever you want. Just don't. Please, don't."

Enzo stepped forward, and she flinched so hard she hit the floor. The sound sickened him. It was the sound of a bird with a broken wing hitting the ground.

"Look at me," Enzo commanded.

She didn't. She couldn't.

Enzo realized with a jolt of nausea that he hadn't married a spoiled princess to punish a rival. He had accidentally liberated a prisoner. Preston Whitcomb hadn't offered him a daughter; he had offered him a broken soul he no longer wanted to maintain.

"I am not your father," Enzo said, the words feeling alien and heavy on his tongue.

"That’s what they all say," she whispered.

Enzo knelt, not too close, trying to be a different kind of presence. He realized he was the most dangerous man in Chicago, and yet, in this room, he was the one who felt powerless. He reached out, his hand hovering over the lace that remained, and pulled it gently away from her, giving her space.

"I don't hurt women, Harper. And I certainly don't hurt people who belong to me."

She looked up then, her blue-gray eyes searching his face, looking for the lie. She found only a cold, hard, terrifying focus.

"Why did you marry me?" she asked, her voice steadying.

"Because I wanted to destroy your father," Enzo admitted, not out of cruelty, but out of a sudden, brutal need for honesty. "I thought you were the weapon he used to protect his empire. I didn't know you were the foundation he was standing on."

He stood up, his face hardening into a mask of decision. He walked to the walk-in closet, grabbed a heavy, silk robe, and tossed it to her.

"Put that on. I’m going to call my physician. You’re going to be examined."

May you like

"No," Harper said, standing up, clutching the robe to her chest. "No doctors. If you tell him… if you go after my father, he will kill you. He has eyes everywhere, Enzo. You don't know what he's capable of."

Enzo smirked, a dangerous, jagged expression. "Harper, you have no idea who I am. Preston Whitcomb built an empire on fear. I built mine on the ashes of men like him."
