Chapter 3 - The Fractured Empire

The news of the DeLuca-Whitcomb merger sent shockwaves through Chicago. But the shockwave Enzo was preparing was of a different caliber.
He began the systematic dismantling of Preston Whitcomb’s life. It wasn't about violence—not yet. It was about leverage. Enzo used his contacts in the banking sector to freeze Preston’s primary assets. He leaked the documents regarding the illegal offshore accounts to a federal prosecutor he had in his pocket.
Preston Whitcomb, the king of the North Shore, found himself bleeding out in the boardroom.
Two weeks into the marriage, Enzo returned home to find Harper in the garden. She was wearing a simple dress, her hair loose. She looked different—less like a doll and more like a woman reclaiming her space.
"He called," Harper said, not looking at him.
Enzo stopped. "What did he say?"
"He demanded I come home. He said you were a barbarian and that you’d eventually get bored of me." She finally looked at him, her eyes searching. "Are you going to get bored, Enzo?"
Enzo walked over to her. The garden was silent, save for the wind. "I don't get bored of things that are mine, Harper. And you are mine to protect."
"I don't want to be protected," she said, her voice finding a sharp edge. "I want to be free. I want him to pay for what he did to me, to my mother, and to your brother."
Enzo realized then that he hadn't married a victim. He had married a storm.

"If you want him to pay," Enzo said, pulling a tablet from his coat, "then you need to testify. I have the location of the safe house where he keeps the physical ledgers. It’s not just about money, Harper. It’s about the people he’s had silenced."
Harper looked at the screen. She didn't hesitate. "Take me there."
