Chapter 6 - The Fall of the House of Sterling

By the next morning, the financial world was in a state of absolute chaos. The news of the "Sterling Embezzlement Scandal" broke on the front page of every major financial publication. The stock of Sterling Developments plummeted eighty percent in pre-market trading, wiping out billions of dollars of generational wealth in a matter of hours.
I watched the live news feed from my hospital bed as federal agents escorted Charles Sterling Senior out of his New York penthouse in handcuffs. He looked old, broken, and completely devastated.
Beside me, Julian was quietly filling a suitcase with my belongings. The doctor had formally discharged me, confirming that I was completely out of danger.
"The judge denied Victoria's bail," Julian said, closing the zipper of the bag. "After the federal authorities stepped in, she was classified as an extreme flight risk. She’s being moved to a maximum-security women’s correctional facility downtown to await her criminal trial."
"And Martha?" I asked, remembering the old caretaker who had stood by and watched me get pushed down the stairs.
"Martha was fired this morning," Julian said, his voice tightening. "The security footage showed her actively deleting the main estate security logs three hours before the incident to help Victoria hide her entry. She’s been charged with conspiracy and tampering with evidence. She’ll likely face house arrest given her age, but she will never set foot in a Sterling property again."
I leaned back against the pillows, letting out a long, clean breath. The air in our lives finally felt clear. The toxic web that had surrounded our marriage since the day we said "I do" had been completely dismantled.
"What do we do now, Julian?" I asked, looking at my swollen belly. "The estate... it feels so empty now. So tainted by everything that happened."
Julian walked over, sitting on the edge of my bed. He took both of my hands in his, his eyes filled with a deep, serene warmth. "We leave it, Maddy. We sell the estate. We don't need that massive, hollow mansion to prove who we are. I’ve already put the property on the market. We’re going to build a new home. A real home, just for us and our daughter."
"Where?" I smiled, a genuine sense of peace washing over me.

"A few years ago, my grandfather left me a piece of land on the coast of Maine," Julian said, his eyes shining with anticipation. "It’s a beautiful, wild cliff overlooking the ocean. No high-society galas, no corporate politics, no toxic ex-wives. Just the sea, the pine trees, and us. I want to build a house there, Maddy. A house where our daughter can learn to walk without ever having to look behind her."
Tears of joy finally blurred my vision. I pulled him down into a deep, loving kiss. "That sounds like heaven, Julian."
