Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of White Walls

The hospital room smelled heavily of antiseptic and ozone. The steady, rhythmic beep... beep... beep of the fetal heart monitor filled the space, a sound that felt like the only anchor keeping Julian and me grounded in reality.
The doctor, a kind-faced obstetrician named Dr. Alana Chen, finished reviewing the ultrasound screen. She turned down the volume of the machine and wiped the warm gel off my swollen belly.
"Well, Mr. and Mrs. Sterling, I have excellent news," Dr. Chen said, offering a warm, reassuring smile. "The amniotic sac is completely intact, there is no placental abruption, and the baby’s heart rate is perfectly stable at 145 beats per minute. Madelyn, you have some severe bruising along your left hip and shoulder from the impact against the wooden landing, but physically, your body protected your daughter beautifully."
Julian let out a long, ragged breath that sounded like a sob. He collapsed into the plastic chair beside my bed, burying his face in my right hand, kissing my fingers over and over again. "Thank god. Thank god. I thought I lost you both. I would have died, Maddy. I swear to god I would have died."
"I'm okay, Julian," I said softly, running my fingers through his dark, messy hair. "The plan worked. We had to catch her in the act, otherwise her family's lawyers would have kept burying the harassment charges forever."
Julian looked up, his eyes bloodshot and dark with guilt. "I hate that I let it get this far. I hate that my past put you in that position. If I hadn't been so blind to Victoria’s instability during our divorce, she never would have targeted you."
"She targeted me because she couldn't handle the fact that you built a real, loving life without her," I said firmly. "She wanted the Sterling name and the empire. She didn't want you."
The door to the room opened quietly, and Detective Ruiz stepped inside, holding a file folder. His expression was grim. "Mr. Sterling, Mrs. Sterling. I have an update on the booking process, but it’s not exactly straightforward."
Julian stood up, his protective instincts instantly flaring. "What do you mean? You have the video evidence. It's an open-and-shut case."
"It should be," Ruiz sighed, pulling up a chair. "But Victoria’s father, Charles Sterling Senior, just flew in from New York on a private jet. He’s retained Victor Cross—the most ruthless corporate defense attorney on the East Coast. They’ve already filed a motion for an emergency bail hearing, claiming the video evidence was obtained via entrapment because the police installed the camera without a warrant signed by a state judge, only a magistrate's authorization."
"That's corporate bureaucracy!" Julian snapped, slamming his fist against the bedside table. "She threw a pregnant woman down a flight of stairs! My wife is black and blue!"

"I know," Ruiz said quietly, looking at me with deep respect. "But Charles Sterling has immense political leverage in this city. They aren't trying to win a trial right now; they're trying to get Victoria out of jail tonight so they can move her to a private psychiatric facility in Switzerland, out of our jurisdiction. If she leaves the country, we can't extradite her easily for a domestic assault charge."
I sat up slightly, ignoring the sharp pain in my hip. The calculating calm that had carried me through the fall returned, cold and sharp. "They want to play dirty? Fine. Julian, call your grandfather’s old estate attorney. It's time to reveal the one secret Victoria’s father is terrified of."
