Chapter 1 - The Masterpiece of Deception

The grand mahogany staircase of the Sterling Estate was dead silent for a fraction of a second after my voice faded into the phone. “Detective Ruiz... it's already happened. Send everyone here immediately.”
I dropped my hand, slipping the phone back into the deep pocket of my oversized maternity cardigan. I didn't let the icy, calculating look stay on my face for more than a heartbeat. In an instant, I forced my features back into a mask of pure, unadulterated agony. I let out a sharp, breathless cry, my hands tightly wrapping around my seven-month pregnant belly as I curled into a ball on the cold wooden landing.
Above me on the stairs, Victoria Sterling—my husband’s glamorous, trust-fund-baby ex-wife—was giving an Oscar-worthy performance. She was hyperventilating, burying her perfectly contoured face into the shoulder of Martha, the elderly estate caretaker.
"She tried to push me, Martha! You saw it!" Victoria wailed, her voice echoing off the high cathedral ceilings of the mansion. "Madelyn has been trying to drive me out of this family since the day she married Julian! She lunged at me, and when I tried to defend myself, she lost her balance! Oh my god, my nerves are shattered! She needs to apologize to me right now!"
Martha, who had worked for the Sterling family for forty years and was fiercely loyal to Victoria’s wealthy lineage, rubbed Victoria’s back soothingly. She looked down the stairs at me with cold, aristocratic disdain. "Calm down, Miss Victoria, I’m right here. I witnessed the whole thing. Madelyn, honestly, simulating a fall just to get attention while Julian is away on a business trip? You should be ashamed of yourself. Get up off the floor and apologize to Victoria this instant."
I didn't move. I squeezed my eyes shut, letting out a weak, guttural groan. I didn't need to fight them with words. I had already won the chess match; they just didn't know the board had been flipped.
For months, Victoria had been orchestrating a subtle, vicious campaign to destroy my marriage to Julian. She had planted old love letters, showed up uninvited to family dinners, and whispered to the high-society elite that I was a gold-digging opportunist who trapped Julian with an unplanned pregnancy. She thought I was just a quiet, fragile girl from a middle-class background who would break under the pressure of her psychological warfare.
She had no idea that I had spent the last three weeks working secretly with the police department’s fraud and domestic harassment division.
The heavy front doors of the estate suddenly burst open with a violent crash. The sound cut through Victoria’s fake sobbing instantly.
A dozen uniform police officers poured into the foyer, led by a tall, sharp-eyed man in a trench coat—Detective Marcus Ruiz. Right behind them was Julian, my husband. He was still in his corporate suit, his face entirely bloodless, his eyes wide with a terror that tore at my heart.
"Madelyn!" Julian roared, bypassing the police officers and sprinting across the marble foyer. He threw himself down on his knees on the wooden landing beside me, his hands trembling violently as he reached for me. "Oh my god, Maddy! Don't move, don't move. The ambulance is right behind us."

"Julian!" Victoria shrieked from the top of the stairs, her tears instantly drying up as she realized the script had gone completely off-script. "Julian, thank god you’re here! Your wife is insane! She just tried to attack me, she threw herself down the stairs to frame me!"
Detective Ruiz walked calmly to the foot of the stairs, looking up at Victoria and Martha. He pulled a digital recording device from his pocket. "Victoria Sterling, I suggest you step down here very slowly. And keep your mouth completely shut."
