Chapter 2 - The Trap Springs

The sirens of the approaching ambulance wailed in the distance, cutting through the heavy tension of the mansion. Julian was white as a sheet, cradling my head in his lap while keeping his hands away from my stomach, terrified of causing internal damage.
"Maddy, please tell me you're okay. Please speak to me," he whispered, his voice cracking with an agonizing fear.
I leaned into him, letting out a soft, controlled whimper. "The baby, Julian... I felt her kick right after the fall, but my hip... she pushed me so hard."
"I didn't push you!" Victoria screamed, descending the stairs with Martha hovering behind her like a shield. "Julian, you know me! We were married for four years! I am a victim of her jealousy! She invited me over here today just to bait me into a fight!"
Detective Ruiz stepped in front of Victoria, blocking her path to Julian. "Miss Sterling, you were barred from this property by a temporary restraining order issued four days ago. Why are you inside this house?"
Victoria's eyes darted around the room, her wealthy composure finally beginning to fracture at the edges. "Martha let me in! I left some of my mother’s antique jewelry in the master bedroom safe when the divorce was finalized. I had a legal right to retrieve my property!"
"I let her in, Detective," Martha chimed in righteously, crossing her arms. "I’ve managed this household for decades. This girl, Madelyn, has been fabricating lies to alienate Julian from his real family. Victoria belongs here. Madelyn is the interloper."
Ruiz smiled a cold, professional smile. He turned to one of his officers. "Officer Davis, please secure the security footage from the hidden nanny-cam we installed in the foyer ceiling yesterday afternoon."
Victoria’s breath hitched. Her face turned an ugly, gaunt shade of ash. "What? What hidden camera?"
"Mr. Sterling gave us full permission to wire the house twenty-four hours ago after we intercepted the threatening text messages you sent to his wife from a burner phone," Ruiz explained, his voice chillingly calm. "We watched the live feed in the van down the street, Miss Sterling. We saw you corner Mrs. Sterling at the top of the stairs. We heard you say, 'If I can't have Julian's child, you sure as hell won't either,' right before you shoved her."
Julian’s head snapped up. The look in his eyes wasn't just anger; it was a murderous, predatory rage. He stood up slowly, stepping away from me for a brief second as the paramedics rushed into the foyer with a stretcher.
"You did what, Victoria?" Julian asked, his voice dangerously quiet, vibrating with a frequency that made even Martha step back in terror.
"Julian, it’s a setup! The police are twisting it!" Victoria cried, reaching out to grab his sleeve.
"Do not touch me," Julian growled, knocking her hand away with enough force to send her stumbling back against the banister. "If anything happens to my wife or my daughter, Victoria... there isn't a lawyer in this country wealthy enough to keep you safe from me."
"Victoria Sterling, you are under arrest for aggravated assault, felony stalking, and violation of a domestic protection order," Detective Ruiz announced, grabbing her wrists and clicking a pair of heavy steel handcuffs around her manicured wrists.

As the paramedics carefully lifted me onto the stretcher, I caught Victoria’s eye. The fake tears were gone from her face, replaced by a raw, naked horror as the reality of her arrest set in. I allowed myself one tiny, microscopic tilt of my lips—a silent, triumphant smile that only she could see.
The queen of high society was going to jail.
