Chapter 5 - The Courthouse Showdown

The municipal courthouse at night was a ghostly, imposing structure of granite and shadow. Inside the closed-door courtroom of Judge Evelyn Vance, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense.

Charles Sterling Senior stood at the defense table. He was a man of seventy, with a thick mane of silver hair and a posture that screamed generational wealth and absolute arrogance. Beside him was Victor Cross, the slick defense attorney, and behind them sat Victoria, looking pale and disheveled but still smugly confident that her father’s power would shield her.

"Your Honor," Victor Cross argued, his voice dripping with smooth theatricality. "The video evidence collected by the police is completely tainted. It was a coordinated entrapment scheme orchestrated by the victim, Madelyn Sterling, to alienate my client from her family estate. We demand an immediate release on personal recognizance so Miss Sterling can receive private medical care."

Judge Vance looked over her glasses at Detective Ruiz and the district attorney. "Does the state have a response to the warrant validity challenge?"

Before the DA could speak, the heavy wooden doors of the courtroom swung open. Julian walked in. He didn't look like a distraught husband; he looked like an emperor entering a conquered territory. He walked straight past the gallery and stood right beside the prosecutor's table.

"Mr. Sterling," Judge Vance said, her tone warning him. "This is a closed hearing. You cannot simply burst in—"

"Your Honor, I am here as the aggrieved party, and I am introducing new evidence that directly impacts the flight risk of the defendant," Julian said, his voice echoing with absolute authority. He placed a thick leather binder on the table, slamming it down with a sound that made Victoria flinch.

Charles Senior sneered, adjusting his gold cufflinks. "Julian, don't be dramatic. Your little middle-class wife had a clumsy fall. We will pay for her medical bills, but don't think you can use this to play corporate games with me."

"I'm not playing games, Charles," Julian said, turning his head slowly to lock eyes with the old man. "This binder contains thirty years of federal bank records from the Swiss bank Clariden Leu. It details exactly how you stole forty-two million dollars from my grandfather’s estate to fund Sterling Developments."

The arrogance completely vanished from Charles Senior's face. He froze, his hand stopping halfway to his jacket pocket. The silver-haired billionaire looked as if he had just been struck by lightning.

"What... what nonsense is this?" Charles stammered, his voice losing its smooth resonance.

"It's a federal wire fraud case, Charles," Julian said coldly. "The FBI financial crimes unit in Washington was copied on this digital file exactly twenty minutes ago. Within the hour, an emergency freeze will be placed on every single corporate and personal asset belonging to the Sterling Development Group."

"Father?" Victoria asked, her voice suddenly high and terrified, sensing the shift in the room. "Father, what is he talking about? Tell him he's lying!"

Charles Senior didn't answer his daughter. He looked at Julian, his lips trembling. "Julian... let's talk about this privately. We can settle this. I can transfer the New York holdings to your name. We can resolve Victoria’s... situation."

"There is no settlement," Julian said, his expression completely merciless. "Your daughter is going to trial for trying to murder my child. And you are going to a federal penitentiary for the rest of your natural life."
