Chapter 5 - The Fire in the Studio

The colonial neighborhood of Coyoacán was quiet beneath the night sky. The old Aranda art gallery sat at the end of a cobblestone street, surrounded by ancient bougainvillea vines and rusted iron gates.
Alejandro and Rodrigo, accompanied by three undercover officers, approached the back entrance of the stone building. The lock was picked, dangling loose.
"Stay back, Mr. Aranda," Captain Delgado whispered, leading the tactical sweep into the dim, dusty art studio.
Inside, the air smelled of turpentine, old paper, and gasoline.
Paintings were slashed, easels overturned, and floorboards ripped open near the central fireplace. Standing near an open iron safe was Marcela, dressed in black, her hands covered in soot as she stuffed thick stacks of bearer bonds into a leather duffel bag.
Standing beside her were two armed men dressed in tactical gear—Ernesto Sordo’s mercenaries.
"Looking for your inheritance, sister?" Alejandro’s voice echoed through the high-ceilinged room.
Marcela whipped around, pulling a small silver pistol from her jacket, her eyes wild with unhinged desperation. "Alejandro! You just couldn't stay out of it, could you?!"
"Drop the weapon, Marcela!" Captain Delgado shouted, aiming his service weapon at her. "The building is surrounded!"
Marcela let out a shrill, hysterical laugh. "Surrounded? My father has a helicopter waiting three blocks from here! I am taking what is mine! Mom spent thirty years rotting in that marriage, and I am not going to prison for that stupid maid and her bastard child!"
"Valeria’s child is my legitimate heir," Alejandro said, taking a slow step forward. "And you are nothing but a thief and a murderer."
"Don't take another step!" Marcela screamed, kicking over a large canister of industrial turpentine. The flammable liquid spilled across the floorboards, soaking into the old wooden canvases.
Before anyone could react, Marcela pulled a gold lighter from her pocket, flicked it open, and threw it onto the puddle!
WOOSH!
A wall of bright orange fire erupted instantly, cutting off the exit! Thick black smoke filled the air as the dry wood and oil paints caught fire like tinder!
"Move! Out!" Captain Delgado yelled, his men returning fire as Marcela’s mercenaries began shooting through the smoke!
Gunfire echoed violently inside the burning building. Alejandro ducked behind a heavy oak desk as bullets shattered the glass skylight above. Through the rising flames, he saw Marcela struggling to drag her heavy duffel bag toward the rear window exit.
"Marcela!" Alejandro shouted, shielding his face from the intense heat. "The roof is collapsing! Leave the bag!"
"Never!" she shrieked, clutching the money.
A massive wooden support beam, consumed by flames, gave way with a deafening crack. It crashed down directly over the rear exit, trapping Marcela beneath a shower of burning timber and heavy stone masonry!
Her screams echoed through the burning gallery.
Alejandro didn't hesitate. Ignoring the smoke and roaring fire, he grabbed an iron fire extinguisher and rushed toward the collapsed beam, spraying the flames to clear a path.
"Alejandro, get out! It’s going to explode!" Rodrigo screamed, pulling him by his collar.

"She’s still my sister!" Alejandro roared, using all his strength to shove a burning beam off Marcela’s trapped leg.
He pulled her bloody, unconscious body from the rubble just as the central roof crashed down in a wave of sparks and fire! Rodrigo and Alejandro dragged Marcela out through a side window, tumbling onto the cobblestone courtyard outside as emergency sirens wailed in the distance.
