Chapter 2 - The Toxicology Report

The private wing of Santa Fe Medical Center was locked down under heavy security. Alejandro had personally hired four independent armed guards to stand outside Room 502, strictly forbidding any member of the Aranda family or their corporate attorneys from coming within fifty yards of his wife.

Valeria lay on the hospital bed, connected to IV lines delivering pain relief, anti-inflammatories, and fetal monitoring fluid. The obstetrician had spent two hours treating her chemical burns, which were identified as severe contact dermatitis caused by an industrial-grade bleach solution.

Alejandro sat beside her, his head buried in his hands. He hadn't slept in thirty-six hours. The guilt was eating him alive. He had spent months focusing on real estate mergers and board meetings while his wife was being methodically abused right under his roof.

The door opened softly, and Dr. Morales, a trusted physician who owed no allegiance to the Aranda fortune, walked in holding a thick blue file.

"How is the baby?" Alejandro asked instantly, standing up.

"By some absolute miracle, Mr. Aranda, the fetus is stable," Dr. Morales said, sliding his glasses down his nose. "Your son is a fighter. But the physical trauma your wife endured came dangerously close to inducing premature labor. Another day without medical intervention, and you would have lost them both."

Alejandro wiped a hand over his face, swallowing back a knot of emotion. "And the burns? The bruises?"

Dr. Morales’ expression turned grave. "The welts on her abdomen were caused by direct application of concentrated household chemicals—specifically formulated to cause intense skin necrosis without leaving deep muscular scars. It’s a torturous method meant to simulate severe self-inflicted skin conditions."

"And the toxicology report?" Valeria asked quietly from the bed, her voice raspy.

Dr. Morales looked at Valeria with profound sympathy. "We found heavy traces of a synthetic neurotoxin in your blood system—specifically Brugmansia extract, a scopolamine derivative. In small, daily doses, it causes severe muscle weakness, paralysis, disorientation, and extreme compliance. It explains why you were unable to fight back or escape."

Alejandro’s blood ran cold. "They were poisoning her. Daily."

"It was in the morning tea," Valeria whispered, a lone tear sliding down her cheek. "Doña Esther insisted on having her personal maid prepare a special 'prenatal herbal tea' for me every morning since my fourth month. If I refused to drink it, Marcela would make a scene, calling me ungrateful..."

Alejandro slammed his fist into the wall, cracking the drywall. "My own mother poisoned my pregnant wife! Why?! What could you possibly have discovered that was worth killing you and my unborn child?!"

Valeria reached out, her trembling hand touching his forearm. "It wasn't just about me, Alejandro. It was about the gallery. Three months ago, I was restoring an old family portrait from your grandfather’s estate in Coyoacán. Behind the canvas of your grandfather's portrait, I found a hidden compartment."

Alejandro frowned. "My grandfather’s portrait? The founder of Aranda Real Estate?"

"There were medical records inside, Alejandro," Valeria said, her eyes fixed on his. "And DNA tests from thirty years ago. Doña Esther isn't just your mother... and your father didn't die of a heart attack."

Before she could elaborate, the hospital room phone rang sharply. Alejandro picked it up.

It was his chief financial officer, voice trembling with panic. "Alejandro! You need to turn on the news right now! Doña Esther just called an emergency board meeting at Aranda Enterprises. She’s filing papers to declare you mentally incapacitated due to emotional distress, and she’s taking control of all corporate assets!"
