Chapter 4 - The Shadows of Coyoacán

Although Esther and Marcela were behind bars in a high-security holding facility awaiting trial, the danger was far from over.

Two days later, Valeria was released from the hospital under high-level security protection. Alejandro brought her to a secluded, heavily guarded villa in Valle de Bravo, far away from the toxic luxury of the Las Lomas mansion.

The air was fresh, surrounded by pine trees and quiet water. For the first time in months, Valeria was able to sleep without waking up in terror.

Sitting on the porch overlooking the lake, Alejandro wrapped a soft wool blanket around Valeria’s shoulders, handing her a mug of warm chamomile tea.

"You don't have to go back to that house ever again," Alejandro promised, holding her hand. "I’ve put the Las Lomas mansion up for sale. All the proceeds will go into a trust fund for victims of domestic abuse."

Valeria leaned her head against his chest, listening to his steady heartbeat. "It still feels like a nightmare, Alejandro. Every time I close my eyes, I see your mother’s face in that basement... telling me that my baby would never see the light of day."

"I am so sorry, Valeria," Alejandro murmured, tears filling his eyes. "I was so blind. I was so obsessed with building an empire that I left you alone with monsters."

"You came back for me," she whispered, looking up at him. "You pulled away the blanket. You chose to see the truth when it would have been easier to believe their lies."

Just then, Rodrigo walked up the wooden steps of the porch, holding a tablet. His face was grim.

"Boss," Rodrigo said quietly. "We have a problem. Licenciado Peralta—the family lawyer—just posted bail for Marcela."

Alejandro stood up, his eyes narrowing. "On what grounds? She’s facing attempted murder charges!"

"Peralta used a corrupt judge in Estado de México," Rodrigo explained. "They argued that Marcela was merely a bystander under her mother’s psychological influence. Furthermore, Ernesto Sordo—Marcela’s biological father—has resurfaced. He’s a powerful cartel-linked developer in Northern Mexico, and he’s funneling millions into her defense team."

Valeria’s hands began to shake again. "She’s coming after us..."

"She won't get near you," Alejandro swore firmly. "Where is Marcela now, Rodrigo?"

"She was seen heading toward the old family gallery in Coyoacán," Rodrigo reported. "Word is, your father kept a secondary safe under the floorboards containing original bearer bonds worth fifty million dollars—assets that weren't registered in the corporate audit. She wants the cash to flee the country."

Alejandro looked at Valeria, then back at Rodrigo.

"I'm going to Coyoacán," Alejandro declared. "It’s time to end this once and for all."

"Alejandro, no!" Valeria pleaded, grabbing his wrist. "It’s a trap! Ernesto Sordo’s men will be there!"

"I have to go, Valeria," Alejandro said gently, kissing her forehead. "If I don't catch her now, she will spend the rest of her life hunting us from the shadows. I need to protect you and our son."
