Chapter 1 - The Marks on the Silk

The heavy silk blanket fell to the floor with a soft, hollow rustle.
Alejandro’s breath caught in his chest. The accusations of infidelity, the rage, the bitter humiliation he had prepared to spew—all of it dissolved into a sickening, paralyzing wave of horror.
Valeria’s silk nightgown was torn at the shoulder, revealing skin covered in angry, purplish bruises that traced down her ribs and arms. Her wrists were raw, scraped as if held down against heavy metal, and her left ankle was grotesquely swollen, bound tightly with a improvised bandage made from a torn pillowcase. But worst of all was her six-month pregnant belly—crisscrossed with dark red welts and severe chemical burns that looked like acid had been spilled over her delicate skin.
"Valeria..." Alejandro gasped, his voice cracking as his knees nearly buckled. He dropped to his knees beside the bed, his hands hovering over her in terror, afraid to touch her for fear of causing more pain. "My God... what happened to you? Who did this to you?!"
Valeria pulled her knees toward her chest, crying silently, her whole body shaking violently. "I told you... I told you to just leave me alone, Alejandro..."
"Who did this?!" he roared, his eyes wild with a mixture of agony and explosive rage. "Was it an intruder? Did someone break into the house?!"
"No one broke into the house, Alejandro," Valeria whispered, her voice barely a thread. "The monsters live here. They’ve been here all along."
Before Alejandro could process her words, the bedroom door swung wider. His sister Marcela stood in the hallway, dressed in a sleek designer silk robe, a mug of coffee in her hand. Her face held a smirk that quickly vanished the moment she saw the state of the room.
"Alejandro? What’s going on in here?" Marcela asked, stepping inside with engineered concern. "Did she finally confess about her secret visits?"
Alejandro stood up slowly. The air around him turned arctic. He turned to face his sister, his fists clenching so hard his knuckles turned white.
"Look at her, Marcela," Alejandro said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "Look at my wife."
Marcela’s eyes flickered toward the bed, catching a glimpse of the chemical burns and bruised skin. A quick, subtle flash of panic crossed her face before she smoothly put on an expression of disgust. "Oh, goodness! What has she done to herself? I told you, Alejandro, she’s been mentally unstable for weeks! She must be self-harming to get attention or to frame us because she knows you were going to divorce her!"
"Self-harming?" Valeria croaked from the bed, looking up with tears spilling over her bruised cheeks. "You held me down in the basement three nights ago, Marcela! You and Doña Esther!"
Alejandro felt as if the room had lost all gravity. "What did you just say?"
"She’s lying!" Marcela shouted, her voice pitching high and defensive. "She’s insane, Alejandro! She’s trying to tear our family apart! Why would Mom and I ever do something like that?"
"Because of the baby," Valeria sobbed, clutching her abdomen. "They found out about the blood work, Alejandro. They found out your mother’s secret!"
"Enough of this nonsense!"
A cold, authoritative voice cut through the room. Doña Esther Aranda stepped into the bedroom. At sixty-two, the matriarch of the Aranda family was a picture of aristocratic perfection—her gray hair styled impeccably, wearing gold jewelry, her eyes as cold as slate.
Esther surveyed the scene without blinking an eye. She looked at Valeria as if looking at dirt on her carpet, then turned to her son.
"Alejandro, pull yourself together," Esther commanded smoothly. "Your wife has clearly suffered a severe psychotic break due to pregnancy hormones. I have already taken the liberty of calling Dr. Valenzuela. He is downstairs with a private transport team. We are taking her to our private clinic in Cuernavaca where she can be properly... quieted."
Alejandro looked between his mother, his sister, and his broken, terrified wife. The photo Marcela had sent him—the blurry silhouette leaving through the back door at 2:00 AM—flashed in his mind. It hadn't been a lover. It had been someone bringing chemical agents or moving Valeria back into the house after torturing her in the estate's disused sub-basement.
"You knew," Alejandro whispered, staring at his mother. "You sent me that photo to make me hate her so I wouldn't look under the blanket."
Esther’s posture stiffened, her regal mask cracking just enough to reveal the icy predator beneath. "I did what was necessary to protect the Aranda legacy, Alejandro. Something you are too soft-hearted to do."
"Get out," Alejandro growled.
"Alejandro—" Marcela started.
"GET OUT OF MY ROOM!" Alejandro bellowed, a sound so loud it vibrated the glass in the windows.
Esther sneered, pulling Marcela back by her arm. "You are making a grave mistake, son. When the truth comes out, you will realize that girl was the downfall of everything we built."

As his mother and sister stepped back into the hallway, Alejandro rushed back to the bed. He wrapped his expensive wool coat gently around Valeria’s bruised, shivering frame, lifting her carefully into his arms.
"I'm taking you to a hospital," Alejandro swore, tears burning his eyes as he held his wife close. "A real hospital. And no one in this family will ever touch you again."
