Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the Empire

Inside the command van outside, Emma watched the tactical telemetry screens instantly go dead. The audio feed from Jack’s headset dissolved into harsh static.
"Jack!" Emma screamed, pulling off her headset.
Ignoring the pain in her ankle, she threw open the van door and dashed out into the pouring rain, running blindly toward the decaying warehouse complex.
"Mrs. Mercer, stop! It's not safe!" Agent Miller yelled, sprinting after her with two officers.
Inside the freezing basement room, Jack frantically searched the concrete walls for an escape route. The low, rhythmic ticking of a demolition timer echoed from behind a stack of wooden crates near the support pillar.
"00:45..." the red digital display read.
"Jack, over here!" Nora shouted, pointing to a high ventilation shaft near the ceiling, its metal grate rusted through by decades of salt air.
Jack didn't hesitate. He hoisted Nora onto his broad shoulders. "Reach up! Kick the grate loose!"
Nora kicked the rusted metal twice with all her strength. The iron grate yielded, crashing down onto the concrete floor.
"Climb through! Hurry!" Jack ordered.
Nora hauled herself up into the narrow metal duct, turning back to reach her arms down. "Give me your hand, Jack!"
Jack leapt up, grabbing the edge of the shaft just as the digital timer behind them reached zero.
BOOM!
A blinding flash of orange fire and a deafening shockwave erupted through the basement room. The explosion tore through the lower concrete pillars, sending tons of brick, mortar, and steel collapsing downward in a catastrophic chain reaction.
The force of the blast blew Jack and Nora through the ventilation shaft, propelling them out through a high ground-level window onto the muddy grass outside just as the entire east wing of the warehouse caved inward with a thunderous roar.
A cloud of thick black smoke and dust rose into the stormy night sky.
Emma reached the edge of the rubble, screaming Jack’s name through her tears, blindly digging into the dirt with her bare hands. "Jack! Jack, please!"
Through the thick haze of dust and rain, a tall figure emerged from the smoke, carrying a limping Nora on his back. His tuxedo was torn to shreds, his face covered in soot and blood, but his eyes were fixed entirely on Emma.
"Jack!" Emma sobbed, throwing herself into his arms.
Jack set Nora down safely into the hands of approaching paramedics and pulled Emma into a fierce, desperate embrace. He buried his face in her wet blonde hair, holding her so tightly she could barely breathe.
"I promised you," Jack whispered, his voice trembling with raw emotion. "No one touches my bride."
Fifty yards away, Marcus Vance tried to slip through the shadowy perimeter toward a waiting speedboat on the pier. But Agent Miller and four SWAT officers emerged from the darkness, lasers painted squarely onto Vance’s chest.

"Drop to your knees! Hands on your head!" Miller barked.
Cornered, with nowhere left to run, Vance raised his hands and fell to his knees in the mud. The Mercer conspiracy was officially broken.
