Chapter 1 - The Lockdown at Mercer Manor

The heavy oak doors of the Mercer Manor ballroom swung shut with a muffled thud that echoed off the fifty-foot vaulted ceilings. Outside, the click of heavy electronic deadbolts sounded through the grand foyer.
Jack turned away from his father, his face an impenetrable mask of rage and cold betrayal. "The estate is on complete lockdown," Jack announced into the wireless microphone attached to his lapel, his voice booming over the speakers. "No one enters. No one leaves. Police and federal investigators are already en route."
Panicked whispers rippled through the crowd of three hundred elite guests. State senators shifted uncomfortably in their seats, corporate executives whispered frantically into encrypted phones, and news reporters raised their cameras, furiously live-streaming the unfolding disaster.
Richard Mercer slowly stepped forward, his polished shoes clicking sharply on the polished marble. His dark suit was immaculate, his grey hair impeccably combed. Despite the broken cufflink in Emma's trembling hand, he radiated absolute, terrifying authority.
"Jack, you are letting emotion cloud your judgment," Richard said smoothly, his tone maternal and disappointed, calculated to project calm to the watching cameras. "Your bride is clearly traumatized. She was abducted, hurt, and subjected to immense stress. Her mind is filling in gaps with conspiracy theories. Let the professionals handle this outside the public eye."
"She isn't confused, Father," Jack retorted, taking Emma's cold hand and pulling her behind his broad frame. "She brought proof. And you just admitted you knew she was in danger hours ago, yet you let us stand at this altar waiting for forty-seven minutes without saying a single word."
Richard’s jaw tightened, a microscopic crack in his composure. "I received a vague warning call. I dispatched my personal security to find her quietly to avoid causing a panic among our guests. My intention was to protect this family."
"Your intention was to protect your money," Emma called out, stepping back out from behind Jack. She winced as she shifted weight onto her swollen, bruised ankle, but her voice was unwavering. "The thirty-eight million dollars stolen from the Renewal Initiative didn't go to charity, Mr. Mercer. It went through shell companies—Vanguard Holdings, Apex Construction, and Coastal Investments. All three list your personal security chief, Marcus Vance, as the sole director."
A collective gasp echoed across the room.
Marcus Vance—a broad-shouldered, scarred man standing near the perimeter wall—instinctively reached toward the inside of his tailored jacket.
"Don't even think about it, Marcus," Jack growled, instantly drawing a concealed firearm from his own tuxedo holster and pointing it straight at his father’s head of security. "Drop your weapon on the floor. Now!"
The ballroom erupted into screams as guests ducked behind round banquet tables draped in white silk. Two junior security guards hesitated, caught between their loyalty to the elder Mercer and the lethal focus of Jack Mercer.
"Marcus, stand down," Richard ordered, his voice icy. "Jack, put the gun away. You are making a circus of your own wedding day."
"This stopped being a wedding the moment you sent hitmen after my wife," Jack replied, his eyes locked on Vance.
Vance slowly unholstered his weapon with two fingers and dropped it onto the carpet. "You're making a mistake, kid," Vance muttered under his breath. "You don't know the whole picture."
"Where is Nora?" Emma demanded, her eyes burning with tears as she looked directly at Vance. "Where did you take my maid of honor?!"

Vance remained silent, a smug, cruel smirk touching his lips.
Before anyone could speak further, the high-pitched wail of state police sirens began to echo up the winding drive of the Long Island estate. The authorities had arrived.
