Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Vault

Within thirty minutes, the grand ballroom was transformed into a command center for the Federal Bureau of Investigation and state homicide detectives. The guests were systematically processed, interviewed, and escorted off the property.
In the master library, Emma sat on a plush velvet sofa while a paramedic wrapped a soft pressure bandage around her bruised ankle. Jack stood beside her, holding a cup of warm tea he had poured himself, refusing to let any of his father’s staff near her.
Lead Special Agent Sarah Miller stepped into the library, shutting the heavy double doors behind her. She was a sharp, no-nonsense woman with piercing blue eyes and a thick file tucked under her arm.
"Mr. Mercer, Mrs. Bennett," Agent Miller began, sitting across from them. "We’ve taken Richard Mercer and Marcus Vance into temporary custody downstairs. However, without the physical flash drive or Nora Ellis's testimony, the United States Attorney cannot hold Richard for more than twenty-four hours on kidnapping charges. He has five legal teams already filing motions for his immediate release."
Emma gripped the edge of the sofa. "The flash drive contains the direct digital signatures for the offshore transfers. It has the bank routing codes from the Switzerland accounts that link back to Richard’s private vault in Manhattan."
"Where is Nora, Emma?" Jack asked gently, kneeling beside her. "Did she give you any indication where she was going when she left the hotel earlier today?"
Emma squeezed her eyes shut, trying to piece together the chaotic memory of the morning. "Nora left forty minutes before me. She said she needed to make sure the original physical hard drives were moved from our apartment to a safe location because she felt like she was being followed. She was supposed to meet me at the estate chapel."
"If Vance’s men intercepted her on the highway, they have the drive," Agent Miller noted grimly.
"No," Emma insisted, shaking her head. "Nora is smarter than that. She knew the Mercer empire had eyes everywhere. She wouldn't carry the primary drive on her person."
Suddenly, Emma’s eyes widened. She looked down at her torn wedding dress, specifically at the silver charm bracelet wrapped around her left wrist—a gift Nora had given her an hour before the ceremony began.
"The bracelet..." Emma whispered, unclasping the delicate silver chain.
Jack leaned in close. "What about it?"
Emma held up a tiny, hollow silver locket shaped like a miniature book attached to the chain. She pressed a hidden catch on the side. The locket popped open, revealing a micro-SD card smaller than a fingernail, wrapped in thin protective plastic.
"Nora hid it on me," Emma said, tears spilling down her cheeks. "She knew that if they took her, they would search her bag. She put the entire evidence file on my wrist before I ever got into the limousine."
Agent Miller stood up immediately, taking out an encrypted reader from her belt. "If this micro-SD card holds the cryptographic ledger keys, Richard Mercer won't be walking out of court tomorrow. He’ll be spending the rest of his life in federal prison."

"Find Nora," Emma pleaded, holding Agent Miller’s arm. "Please. That data is useless to me if my best friend is dead."
"We’re running cell tower pings from Vance’s security detail right now," Miller assured her. "If she’s alive, we will find her."
