Chapter 3 - The Interrogation

Downstairs in the estate's subterranean wine cellar—temporarily repurposed as an interrogation space—Richard Mercer sat at a stainless steel table, sipping water from a glass. His high-priced defense attorney, Arthur Pendelton, stood behind him with his arms crossed.

Jack opened the heavy iron door and walked in alone.

"Jack," Pendelton warned immediately, stepping forward. "You cannot speak to my client without counsel present. This entire process is a constitutional violation."

"Get out, Arthur," Jack said, his voice dropping into a register so dark and absolute that the seasoned attorney actually hesitated. "Leave the room before I have the federal marshals remove you for obstruction."

Richard waved his hand dismissively. "It's alright, Arthur. Give my son and me a moment."

Reluctantly, the lawyer stepped outside, leaving father and son alone in the cold, stone-walled room.

Richard looked at his son, his expression calm, almost pitying. "You always were too sentimental, Jack. You fell in love with a girl from a working-class background, and you let her poison your mind against the very empire that paid for your life, your education, and your freedom."

"You embezzled thirty-eight million dollars meant for homeless families, Dad," Jack said, resting his hands on the metal table, leaning in until he was inches from Richard's face. "You built substandard housing units that burned down in Queens two years ago. Three people died in that fire because the wiring wasn't up to code."

Richard didn't flinch. "That was a tragic construction accident."

"It wasn't an accident! You siphoned the safety budget into your personal hedge funds!" Jack shouted, his composure finally snapping. "And when Emma found the paper trail through her accounting firm, you tried to break her leg and bury her!"

"I tried to save this family from ruin!" Richard snapped back, his icy facade cracking into raw anger. "Do you have any idea what it takes to maintain our standing in this city?! The politicians, the bribes, the leverage?! I did it for you! For your future!"

"Where is Nora Ellis?" Jack asked coldly.

Richard lowered his gaze, picking up his glass of water. "I don't know what you're talking about."

"Vance's phone was seized ten minutes ago," Jack lied smoothly, watching his father’s eyes. "The FBI decrypted his location logs. They are raiding the old harbor warehouse in Brooklyn right now."

Richard’s hand twitched slightly over the glass. A subtle, almost imperceptible flicker of doubt crossed his eyes.

"If Nora is dead when they open those doors," Jack continued softly, "I will personally make sure the U.S. Attorney files capital murder charges against you. You will die in a federal cell, forgotten, broke, and alone."

Richard slowly set the glass down. He looked at Jack, seeing for the very first time that his son was no longer a boy he could manipulate. Jack was a man who would tear down the Mercer legacy stone by stone to protect the woman he loved.

"Vance acts independently on tactical matters," Richard whispered, his voice finally showing a trace of weakness. "If... if the girl is at the harbor warehouse, she has about two hours before the demolition crew arrives to clear the site."

Jack stood up, his jaw clenched tight. "Thank you, Father. You just guaranteed your own life sentence."
