Chapter 5 - Blood and Redemption

The safe room shuddered violently as a deep explosion rocked the foundations of the estate. The power inside the vault flickered, turning the screens into static before shutting off entirely.

"Lorenzo!" Hunter screamed inside the dark steel box.

Smoke began seeping through the ventilation vents. The main support beams of the third floor were collapsing. Outside the vault, Lorenzo shoved aside falling debris, his knuckles bleeding, his face covered in soot.

"Lorenzo! The structure is unstable! We have to clear out!" Marco pleaded, dragging a wounded guard toward the exit.

"Not without my son! Not without Hunter!" Lorenzo roared.

He lunged toward the vault door. The electronic keypad was dead, fried by the blast. Lorenzo grabbed a heavy steel crowbar from a fallen mercenary and jammed it into the vault door's manual release frame.

Inside, Hunter could hear the violent metal-on-metal screeching. She held Leo tight against her chest, wrapping him in a thick blanket to protect him from the heat rising through the floorboards.

"Hunter! Stand back from the door!" Lorenzo’s voice boomed from the other side.

With a superhuman surge of adrenaline, Lorenzo heaved against the crowbar. Muscles straining, veins popping along his neck, he forced the heavy steel door open just enough to create a narrow gap.

He reached his arms through the opening. "Give me Leo! Quickly!"

Hunter passed the wrapped baby safely through the narrow gap into Lorenzo's arms. Lorenzo handed the infant to Marco, who was waiting behind him. "Get him out to the armored SUV! Go!"

"Lorenzo, come on!" Hunter cried, struggling to squeeze through the jammed door, but a fallen beam from the ceiling crashed down right behind the vault door, jamming it tight again and trapping her feet under loose masonry.

"Hunter!" Lorenzo yelled. Without a second thought, he squeezed his tall frame through the narrow gap into the filling-with-smoke vault.

He dropped to his knees, using his bare hands to haul the heavy stone blocks off her legs. "I'm not leaving you," he growled through the thick smoke. "I lost Sophia. I am not losing you."

"Lorenzo, the roof is coming down!" she choked out.

Lorenzo lifted the final heavy beam with a roar, freeing her legs. He pulled her into his arms, scooping her up effortlessly. He turned and threw his shoulder against the jammed vault door, bursting back out into the burning corridor just as the vault ceiling collapsed behind them.

Coughing and dodging falling embers, Lorenzo carried Hunter through the destruction of his family home. They burst through the grand entrance into the cool night air of Long Island just as the western wing of the mansion caved in with a thunderous roar.

Rain was pouring down, washing the soot from their faces. Down the driveway, the remaining Moretti attackers had been completely eliminated by Rossi reinforcements.

Marco ran up to them under the cover of an umbrella, holding a quiet, unharmed Leo wrapped safely in his blanket.

Lorenzo set Hunter down gently on her feet. She immediately reached for Leo, holding him close. The baby let out a soft coo, reaching out his tiny hand to touch her wet cheek.

Lorenzo wrapped his long arms around both of them, pulling Hunter and Leo into his chest in front of all his surviving men. He kissed the top of Hunter's head, his body trembling with intense relief.

"It's over," Lorenzo whispered into her hair, his voice breaking. "It's all over."
