Chapter 4 - The Siege of the Estate

Smoke filled the nursery, acrid and blinding. Ears ringing, Hunter squeezed Leo tightly beneath her, shielding his little body with her own.

Through the haze, figures clad in black tactical gear breached through the shattered window, rappelling down from the roof.

Lorenzo didn't hesitate. Even disoriented from the flashbang, his instincts as a warlord were unmatched. He fired three rapid shots, dropping the first intruder before the man's feet hit the floor. Marco opened fire from the doorway, engaging two more attackers who were pushing into the hall.

"Get her to the safe room!" Lorenzo yelled over the deafening gunfire, pulling Hunter up by her arm.

"Lorenzo, be careful!" Hunter cried out, her eyes stinging from the smoke, her arms locked tightly around a screaming Leo.

"Go!" Lorenzo commanded, turning to face another attacker. He tackled the gunman to the ground, disarming him with brutal efficiency as the room devolved into close-quarters chaos.

Marco grabbed Hunter, shielding her with his body as he guided her down a hidden passage behind a bookcase in the hallway. "In here, Miss Higgins! Quick!"

The safe room was a vault made of reinforced steel, equipped with independent air filtration and security monitors. Marco shoved her inside and slammed the heavy door shut, locking the digital seals from the outside to ensure no one could force their way in.

Inside the quiet, steel-lined vault, Hunter collapsed onto a leather bench, trembling violently. Leo was crying hysterically, terrified by the loud noises. Hunter immediately pulled him close, rocking him, whispering soothing words while unbuttoning her shirt to nurse him. As Leo began to feed, his cries softened into tiny hitches, finding comfort in the middle of a warzone.

Hunter stared at the security screens inside the vault. The camera feeds showed the chaos unfolding in the mansion.

Lorenzo was a force of nature. On the screen, she watched him clear the hallway alongside his men. He moved with lethal precision, taking down Moretti’s mercenaries one by one. But as she watched, she saw a familiar face appear on the camera feed near the secondary entrance.

It was Tommy Vance.

Her abusive ex-boyfriend was holding a shotgun, wearing a bulletproof vest that looked too big for him, greedily grabbing silver ornaments and shouting orders to two Moretti gunmen. Tommy had sold out the location of the nursery, leading the attackers right into the house.

Rage, cold and pure, washed over Hunter. Tommy had stolen her savings, ruined her life, caused the death of her unborn daughter, and now he was threatening the baby who had given her a reason to live.

On the monitor, Lorenzo cornered the remaining attackers near the grand staircase. He moved like a ghost, taking out the last mercenary before advancing on Tommy.

Tommy panicked, dropping his shotgun and dropping to his knees, throwing his hands up in terror as Lorenzo approached him like the Grim Reaper. Lorenzo dragged Tommy up by his collar, slamming him against the marble banister, shoving the barrel of his gun straight under Tommy's chin.

Through the vault's audio feed, Hunter heard Tommy's pathetic whimpers. "Please! Don't shoot! It was Moretti! He forced me! Hunter... Hunter knows me! Ask her!"

Lorenzo’s voice came through the speaker, low, lethal, and venomous. "You put her in the hospital. You killed her child. And then you brought violence to mine."

Lorenzo didn't hesitate. A single gunshot echoed through the speakers, and Tommy’s body crumpled to the floor.

The threat was neutralized. But as Lorenzo lowered his gun, Marco rushed up the stairs, blood bleeding through his sleeve.

"Boss! Moretti’s main force... they planted charges on the structural pillars downstairs! The house is going down!"
