Chapter 2 - Shadows over the Estate

By morning, the Rossi estate was in a state of quiet upheaval. The news that little Leo had taken a full feeding and kept it down sent shockwaves through the household staff and Lorenzo's inner circle.
Dr. Halloran arrived at dawn, expecting to prepare death papers. Instead, he found the infant’s vitals stabilized and his skin flushed with healthy color.
"It's... scientifically improbable," Dr. Halloran stammered, checking the monitors. "The natural antibodies, the direct physical contact... it triggered his digestive system to kick back on."
"It's not science, Doctor. It's life," Lorenzo replied coldly from the doorway. He dismissed the doctor and turned his attention to Marco, his most trusted lieutenant and chief of security.
Marco was a tall man with a scarred jaw and a lifetime of loyalty to the Rossi family. He pulled Lorenzo aside into the study. "Boss, we ran a background check on the girl, Hunter Higgins. Her story checks out—lost her baby three weeks ago after a domestic assault by an ex-boyfriend named Tommy Vance. But bringing an outsider into the third-floor sanctuary... it's a security risk."
"She saved my son's life when your guards were sleeping on duty," Lorenzo snapped, pouring himself a bourbon. "Set up quarters for her in the suite adjacent to the nursery. Full security. No one enters without my personal approval."
"And the ex-boyfriend?" Marco asked. "Tommy Vance owes money to the Moretti remnants. He’s been seen hanging around Brooklyn dive bars boasting about his ex getting a high-paying gig in Long Island."
Lorenzo’s eyes darkened into black ice. The Morettis—the rival syndicate responsible for the bomb that took his wife—were broken, but snake heads still twitch after being cut off. "Find Vance. Make sure he never comes near this estate. If he breathes a word about Hunter to the Morettis, handle it."
Meanwhile, upstairs, Hunter was moved into a luxurious bedroom connected directly to Leo’s nursery. It was larger and more opulent than anywhere she had ever lived, yet it felt like a gilded cage. Fine silk sheets replaced her rough linens, and expensive clothes were laid out for her.
Despite the comfort, Hunter felt out of place. She spent her days entirely focused on Leo. Every three hours, she fed him. She bathed him, sang soft lullabies her own mother had taught her, and held him close. With every passing day, Leo gained weight, his tiny cheeks puffing out, his bright blue eyes—so much like his father's—tracking her around the room.
Lorenzo began visiting the nursery frequently. At first, he stood quietly near the doorway, watching them through the shadows. But slowly, the cold distance he maintained began to melt.
One evening, while Hunter was rocking Leo to sleep, Lorenzo walked in carrying a small wooden box. He sat in the armchair across from her—a space he had avoided since Sophia's death.
"He looks like his mother when he sleeps," Lorenzo said quietly, breaking the silence that usually hung between them.
"He has your eyes, though," Hunter offered gently. "Fierce. Unyielding."
Lorenzo let out a dry, humorless chuckle. "Fierce hasn't served me well lately. It brought war to my doorstep. It cost me my wife." He opened the wooden box, revealing a delicate gold locket with a picture of Sophia inside. "I blamed myself every day since the blast. I thought God was taking Leo to punish me."
"Loss isn't a punishment, Mr. Rossi," Hunter said, her voice dripping with genuine empathy. "It’s just... a dark room we get thrown into. We don't choose it. But we can choose whether to keep sitting in the dark."
Lorenzo looked at Hunter, really looking at her for the first time. He saw the faint bruises on her wrists from her past, the tired lines beneath her eyes, and the profound love she showered on his motherless son. A strange warmth flared in his chest—a feeling he thought had died in the fiery wreckage two months ago.
Their moment was shattered by the harsh buzz of Lorenzo’s encrypted phone. He answered it, his expression instantly hardening back into the ruthless Don.

"Speak," Lorenzo commanded.
Marco’s tense voice came through the speaker. "Boss, we have a problem. Tommy Vance just made contact with Mario Moretti. He’s selling information about the maid."
