Chapter 3 - A Whispered Betrayal

The air in Lorenzo's private study turned arctic. He stood behind his massive oak desk, staring down Marco.

"What does Vance know?" Lorenzo demanded.

"He knows Hunter is living at the estate and that she's nursing the baby," Marco reported, his hands folded tightly. "Word on the street is Mario Moretti thinks taking Hunter or the baby is the only leverage he has left to rebuild his family's standing. They know Leo is your weakness, Boss."

Lorenzo slammed his fist onto the mahogany desk. "Double the perimeter guards. Place snipers on the cliff overlook. If a single soul approaches the gates without clearance, put a bullet in them."

"Understood. And Vance?"

"Bring him to me," Lorenzo ordered, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Quietly."

Upstairs, Hunter was unaware of the brewing storm. She was sitting on the carpeted floor of the nursery, letting Leo push himself up on his chubby elbows. He was three months old now, growing stronger every day. The sickly infant had transformed into a bright, giggling baby boy.

Lorenzo entered the room, his dark aura softening slightly at the sight of his son pushing against Hunter’s hands.

"He’s lifting his head higher today," Hunter smiled, looking up at Lorenzo. "The doctor said his developmental milestones are right on track."

Lorenzo sat down on the floor beside them, his long legs folded awkwardly. Leo immediately babbled and reached his tiny hand toward his father. Lorenzo extended his thick index finger, and Leo gripped it tightly with a surprisingly strong hold.

For the first time in months, Lorenzo smiled—a genuine, warm smile that transformed his harsh, angular face. Hunter caught her breath. When Lorenzo wasn't consumed by vengeance, he was breathtakingly handsome.

"Thank you, Hunter," Lorenzo said softly, looking over the baby into her hazel eyes. "For giving him back to me."

"He gave me a reason to keep breathing too, Lorenzo," she confessed, using his first name naturally for the first time.

The tension between them shifted from professional caution to a deep, magnetic pull. Lorenzo reached out, his calloused thumb gently wiping away a stray hair from her cheek. Hunter leaned into the touch slightly, her heart hammering against her ribs—not out of fear, but out of something far more dangerous.

Before the moment could go any further, a loud explosion echoed from the distant iron gates at the edge of the property, followed immediately by the rapid rattle of gunfire.

The security alarms blared throughout the mansion, red emergency lights flashing down the hallways.

Lorenzo was on his feet in a microsecond, drawing a concealed firearm from his holster. "Stay down!" he barked at Hunter.

Hunter instinctively scooped Leo into her arms, backing into the reinforced corner of the nursery. "Lorenzo, what's happening?!"

"Moretti," Lorenzo spat. "Marco!"

Marco burst into the room, tactical vest strapped over his suit, holding an assault rifle. "Boss, they rammed the front gate with a heavy truck! A dozen armed men are pushing up the driveway! They came fast!"

"They didn't come to fight a war," Lorenzo realized, his eyes widening in horror. "It's a distraction. They know where the nursery is."

Just as Lorenzo spoke, the heavy glass of the nursery's high window shattered inward. A flashbang grenade bounced across the floor.

"Cover!" Lorenzo roared, throwing his body over Hunter and Leo just as the blinding light and deafening sound detonated in the room.
