Chapter 6 - The New Dawn

Six months later.
The sun shone brightly over the seaside cottage. It wasn't a mansion, and it didn't belong to the Sterling estate. It was Clara’s. Purchased with her own savings, which she had managed to siphon away long before the trial—a secret stash she had never told anyone about, not even Mark.
She sat on the porch, a soft blanket over her legs. In her arms, the baby—a beautiful, healthy girl named Sophie—cooed at the sound of the ocean waves.
Arthur stood by the railing, looking out at the water. "The court date for the final sentencing is tomorrow. He’ll be away for a long time, Clara."
"I know," Clara said, kissing Sophie’s forehead. "I’m not scared of him anymore. I don't think about him at all."
"You’re a strong woman," Arthur said. "Stronger than I ever was."
"I just wanted to be free," Clara replied.
She looked down at the little girl in her arms. Sophie would never know the fear. She would never know the coldness of that living room or the sound of a belt cracking in the air.
Clara had learned the hard way that silence is a dangerous thing. She had learned that when you cover your face, you hide the truth. But she had also learned that even in the darkest room, there is always a way to call for help—and there is always a dawn after the longest night.

She watched the sunset paint the sky in hues of gold and violet. Her life had been shattered, broken into a thousand jagged pieces, but she had picked them up. She had built a mosaic, not a mirror. And in that mosaic, she finally saw herself: not as a victim, but as a survivor.
She was home. And for the first time, she was truly free.
