Chapter 4 - The Twisted Alliance

The trial began three weeks later. Mark, having been released on bail by his mother’s remaining connections, looked gaunt and desperate. His lawyers were aggressive, attacking Clara’s character, calling her "unstable" and "hallucinating."
But they didn't account for the silent watcher.
Elena, Mark’s mother, was called to the stand. Everyone expected her to lie for her son. She sat in the witness box, dressed in mourning black, looking as composed as ever.
"Mrs. Sterling," the prosecutor asked, "did you witness your son abusing his wife?"
Elena looked at her son. Mark nodded frantically, mouthing 'Lie for me.'
"I did," Elena said, her voice devoid of emotion.
The courtroom erupted. Mark stood up, screaming, "Mother! Don't do this!"
"I did witness it," she continued, looking directly at the judge. "And I did nothing. I watched him starve her. I watched him strike her. I watched him poison her water with mild sedatives to keep her docile."
The courtroom went dead silent. Elena looked at Clara, then back to the judge. "He didn't just hurt her. He hurt me. He kept me in that house, threatening to cut me off from the estate if I didn't help him. I am a victim of his greed, just as much as she is."

It was the ultimate betrayal. Mark’s own mother had realized he was a sinking ship and had jumped off before he could pull her down with him.
Clara watched from the gallery, a sense of grim satisfaction settling over her. The foundation of Mark’s life was crumbling.
