Chapter 2 - The House of Cards

The silence that followed was heavy enough to crush the lungs. Mark, usually so arrogant, looked like a child caught stealing candy. He dropped the belt to the floor with a dull thud.
"Grandfather?" Mark stuttered, his voice lacking any of its former venom. "I... we were just having a family dispute. She’s my wife. I have rights—"
"You have no rights here," Arthur stepped forward, his eyes fixed on Clara. He ignored his grandson entirely, walking straight to the trembling woman. He reached out, not to touch her, but to offer a steadying presence. "Clara, are you harmed?"
"I... I’m okay," Clara managed, her voice cracking.
"You’re lying," Arthur said gently, noting the bruise forming on her arm from a previous encounter. He turned to the officers. "Take him. He is under arrest for domestic assault, coercion, and unlawful imprisonment."
"This is kidnapping!" Elena shrieked, finally putting down her teacup. She stood up, her face flushed with rage. "You cannot enter this home, Arthur! We own this property!"
"Actually," Arthur said, pulling a legal document from his breast pocket, "as of this morning, the holding company that owns this property has been liquidated. You are all trespassing."
As the officers cuffed Mark, he thrashed, screaming insults at Clara. "She’s a gold digger! She set this up! Clara, you won't get a cent of the inheritance!"

Clara watched him being dragged out, not with fear, but with a sudden, overwhelming sense of clarity. The secret she had kept for months—the logs of his abuse, the financial records she had secretly copied, the medical reports of her "accidental" injuries—were all now in Arthur’s hands.
The police led Mark away, his threats trailing off into the distance. Elena stood paralyzed, realizing that her reign of terror had ended in a single, devastating heartbeat.
