Chapter 5 - The Last Stand

Mark’s desperation reached a breaking point. With his mother testifying against him and his grandfather funding the prosecution, Mark had one last play.
He managed to evade his security detail while out on bail. He didn't go to the police. He went to the one place he knew Clara would be: the small community garden she visited every Thursday.
Clara was sitting on a bench, breathing in the fresh air, when she felt a shadow fall over her. She looked up, and her heart stopped. Mark stood there, disheveled, wild-eyed, holding a jagged piece of metal.
"You ruined it," he hissed. "You ruined everything."
"You did this, Mark," Clara said, standing up, her back straight. She didn't retreat. She didn't shake. "You chose this."
"I’m taking you with me," he lunged.
But Mark had forgotten one thing: Arthur Sterling didn't just believe in lawyers. He believed in protection.
From the bushes, two bodyguards emerged before Mark could even close the distance. They tackled him to the ground, pinning his face into the dirt. Clara stepped back, watching him struggle.

"It’s over, Mark," she said, her voice steady and clear. "You aren't the hunter anymore. You're just a man with nowhere left to run."
As the police sirens wailed in the distance, Clara felt a kick inside her womb. A tiny, defiant movement. She placed her hand over it, smiling for the first time in years. The baby was safe.
