Chapter 3 - The Inheritance of Truth

Two days later, Clara sat in a sun-drenched study at Arthur Sterling’s estate. She was safe, fed, and for the first time in years, she was allowed to speak without fear.
Arthur sat across from her. He looked older, tired, but his eyes were kind.
"I knew," Arthur said, breaking the silence. "I knew what kind of man Mark was from the moment he married you. I tried to warn you, Clara, but you were so in love. He played the part so perfectly."
"He told me you were a monster," Clara admitted, tracing the rim of her tea glass. "He told me you would take the baby away from me if I ever left him."
"That was his greatest weapon," Arthur sighed. "He needed you isolated. If you were scared of the world, you would never leave the house. If you never left the house, he could control the inheritance tied to your pregnancy."
Clara looked at him, confused. "The inheritance?"
Arthur pushed a file across the desk. "My daughter’s will. Mark didn't marry you for love, Clara. He married you because my daughter left a trust for her first grandchild. If Mark had a child with a woman he controlled, he could access the funds immediately. If that child was born to a woman who had her own mind... he knew he’d lose everything."
Clara opened the file. Her hands shook as she read the numbers. Mark hadn't just been abusing her; he had been farming her for a payout. The betrayal felt like a cold blade in her gut. She had been nothing more than a vessel to him.

"What happens now?" she asked, looking up.
"Now," Arthur said, "we take the fight to them. We ensure that you and that child are untouchable."
